It's a good deal. The Islanders could be an 8th seed playoff team next year if they're able to fill there line-up with good UFA's this summer (Sedins?) combined with Tavares/Hedman.

Weight is bulletproof IMO. Consumate pro, down to earth real nice guy (met him a buncha times when he was in Edmonton), and actually has a personality. Not to mention he was a great hockey player at one point, still is a pretty good one.

Why not ? He's already won a cup.

He can't have more than three years left in him period. If Dougie likes it on the Island, good for him.

$2.2 million cap hit is a pretty damn reasonable salary for Weight.

I kinda figured it was Long Island, or bust for him. I was still kind of hoping that he might end up in Phoenix, this summer, though. He seems like an ideal line-mate for Peter Mueller at this point in their respective careers. Dougie has a lot to teach and Pete has a lot to learn. Their offensive zone tendencies would be quite the compliment, too, I'd imagine. Oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be. He'll have Bailey and Tavares to tutor, now, I suppose.

Good move by the Isles, Weight is a great leader with tremendous work ethic to help in the development of their young players. Still a solid performer, too.

I love the way the Islanders are going about re-building to be a competitive team again.

Way to go Garth.

Is Doug Weight a masochist?

This is a 1 year deal to a 38 year old. We are unlikely to be going for the cup next year (maybe, MAYBE a playoff berth, but not a cup). This signing will really have no bearing on the draft, especially since most pick the best player available rather than need.

Maybe he wants to win another cup? Is that such a strange thing? Plus, he won the cup as a rental and wasn't able to actually play in the championship game. Just putting it out there but maybe that takes away from the experience. I'm not Doug Weight so I couldn't tell ya.

On a serious note, good signing. For Islander fans, will he be the captain next year? Will Okposo be the future captain, or what?

Good Move by the Islanders. Bring back a contributer and a real character guy. He will definatley be looked at as a leader on such a young team. Maybe he didn't sign with a cup contender because he wants that role. If the Islanders end up with Tarvares, he will have some one to show him the ins and outs of the NHL and a guy with great experience there to help him along the way.

With teams being so conservative surrounding contracts extending beyond 2010, there might not have been a multi-year deal out there for him in FAcy. And if there was, then when the cap drops he'd be listening to constant speculation about him being a buy-out candidate, etc. Probably best to take the 1-year deal in a place that you like (and a place that has a good role for him) and then worry about next year as it comes.

Doesnt really matter this coming year. Snow pretty much came out and said a few weeks back that we arent going after anyone. He plans on fielding basically the same group for 09/10.

Probably the best option. Gives them a chance which of the more unproven young guys can emerge and fit into the team's long term plan.

I could see them staying in the playoff race later in the season next year, a la the Kings this year. But it should be at least another season before they have realistic shot at being a playoff team.

Can't see why this would imply no Tavares, as Weight would be an excellent linemate to help ease JT into the NHL seeing that typically goal scorers play better with playmakers, and Weight's a better playmaker than anyone currently on the Islanders. Plus, given the weaker points of JT's game, it would make sense to start him in the NHL at wing before transitioning him to center.

Anyway, good guy, good price, good contract length. I'm pleased with this signing.

if he gets traded at the deadline, does that bonus still count if his new team makes the playoffs? could be a way for weight to cash in if he's deadline fodder

Good value signing.

His heart/leadership is worth 2.2 against the cap alone.

I know that he is going to be a good help for the kids but I think that he should have tested the market. He had a pretty good year and I could see some winning teams giving him a one or two years contract. I mean it's better finishing a great career with a cup contender rather than one of the worse teams in the league.
