I would say it's a victory to be proud about. Had it been another 5-4 come-from-behind victory against the worst team in the NHL, then you have reason to worry. What we saw was dominance from puck drop until the final buzzer, without one of our top-pair defenseman and still without our second-line center.
LOL Paul Maurice said he wasn't going to ice his best players in the 3rd on all those power plays but with them taking penalties like cross checking, roughing and trying to fight our guys he decided to put them out there.
I got no words for the whopping you guys gave us tonight. Good luck in the playoffs! !

I just really want to see Tavares land on the Island. I have said all along that he reminds me of a new generation Mike Bossy with his natural goal scoring talent and it would be sweet to see that kind of thing happen on the Island again. Maybe you guys can trade him to us for Brandon Sutter and go after Eric Nystrom to put the dynasty group back together.
By my count at least 5 franchise records were broken or tied tonight, and I suspect a 6th:
-Longest winning streak in franchise history (9, also done twice in 2006)
-Longest home winning streak in franchise history (12)
-Most wins by a goalie in a season in franchise history (Ward, 39)
-Most hat tricks in a season by a player in franchise history (Staal, 4)
-Largest shot differential in a game in franchise history (45)
-UNVERIFIED: Largest margin of victory in franchise history (9)
Yeah I might as well not say anything. This game just spoke for itself. Prettymuch everything that could go right did, and for the Isles everything that could go wrong did. I don't mind them putting Staal out there on the PP after the Isles started taking a few liberties out there in the 3rd and I'm not one for running up the score, prettymuch ever. Before that I think the Canes were just ready to finish that one at 6-0 and be done with it.
edit: Comeau out with a broken wrist? Make that everything that could go wrong for the Isles DID go wrong for them.
Here was the comment by Maurice that Caner Soze mentioned:
Quote:
I put our better players on the ice on most power plays in the third period because I didn’t like the penalties they were taking,” Maurice said. “Had they just been hooking or interference I wouldn’t have run it up. But as coaches we’ve got to have some recourse to handle a game like that. We don’t want it to turn stupid. I thought our bench handled it well.

On that last one, I think it is for the Hurricanes portion. However, the Whalers beat the Oilers 11-0 at one point, so it's not a franchise record.
I felt bad for the goalies, but not for the rest of the team as they were trying to goon it up. To that, I say good on Maurice icing his best players on the PP to run the score up.
Not to much to say except its damn good being on the good side of a 9-0 whooping.
Now let's hope we have some goals left for Buffalo.

Well, Staal will be trying his darnedest, that's a good bet.
I don't think many of their fans would mind Hedman as a consolation prize
Yeah, but the Islanders have enough trouble drawing fans and such as it is, but Hedman isn't going improve that much, if any. Tavares is much more known and would be the face of their franchise from Day 1. Hedman will make their team better and maybe help them draw some more fans in the future, but I just think Tavares would do that right away.

Yotes fan here. First.....dang, what a one-sided mismatch, eh?
Second, I don't know the largest margin of victory in Carolina Hurricanes history is, but in franchise history, I know way back in 1984 the Whalers pounded the Oilers 11-0. Yes, you read that right. Oilers. 1984. 11-0.
Third, I like you guys as my EC team, so make some noise in the postseason
I was in the row that won the NC lottery thing 335 row L. I got a backpack full of goodies as well as a stanley cup frame with a piece of the net inside of it. Quite awesome.
A piece of the net! Man. I can't even catch a t-shirt (actually, I finally could have after all these years at the Rangers game last week, it had tumbled a few rows and was mine for the taking, but i could see a little kid running hard for it so I slowed down and let her have it).
I still expect full throttle and I will go out of the way and say it, I expect we put a thumping on the Islanders.
If we can come out in this game the way we came out vs. the Rangers after our 4 day break, that will show me where we are mentally. That will show me where our focus is. It has nothing to do with playing the Islanders, it has to do with approach, focus and desire to keep winning regardless of the circumstances. To me, this is also a game, just as the one after our 4 day break vs. the Rangers, that will show me what we're made of. Are we content to just 'make it?' or do we as a team truly 'want more?'.
We'll see, but I hope its a team that 'wants more' because a team of that mindset heading into the playoffs is better than a content team happy they 'made it' heading into the playoffs. We'll see.

I was correct about Cam matching the franchise record in shutouts (Gerber and Irbe)
Eric Staal had three goals and an assist, and finished with a club-record fourth hat trick of the season. Cam Ward made 12 saves in setting the team's single-season mark with victory No. 39, and he matched another club mark with his sixth shutout while helping Carolina extend its franchise-record home-ice winning streak to 12.
