I think Sharp is more valuable now because Havlat's a UFA so deal Sharp and possibly losing Havlat would leave Chitown pretty thin at wing

I think the Pens say no. Staal is more valuable to the Pens right now than Sharp would be, and I think Gogo has the potential to be a 50pt defenseman and future PP quarterback when Gonchar retires. I mean, they did trade away Whitney. That shows the confidence the Pens have in Letang in Goligoski as our puck moving D.

Edit: Barker and Gogo are both RFAs, and Gogo will cost much less to re-sign, which is very important to the Pens.

Because of course a players trade value is strictly determined by their most recent point totals.

I am not a fan of either team (I am a Blackhawks bandwagon fan with the Sens out though) and I would much rather have Sharp over Staal anyday. Sharp can score and you can count on him to score. He will put the puck in the net and he can pass as well. He also kills penalties, can play wing or centre and is decent defensively. He puts up 60 points and would put up about 75 with Crosby IMO. Staal is basically the same player but only a winger and less offensive talent.

Then Cam Barker is much better then Goligoski. Stats or no stats, they don't even compare.

You overlook my point completely.

Also, Staal isn't a winger.

Using these stats aren't the best way to argue if this trade is fair or not. Sharp is 28 years old and plays on his teams top two lines. It took him until he was 25 to play his first full season and he put up 20 G and 15 A that year, totals Staal has bettered as an 18 and 20 year old.

And if you look at Barker's stats vs Goligoski's it looks like Gogo is one year behind in development as Barker put up 6 G and 12 A in 45 games last year as opposed to Goligoski's 6 G and 14 A in the same number of games.

Now I'd take Barker over Gogo because of his size advantage but I'd keep Staal over Sharp. He is 8 years younger, scores with checking line talent linemates, and is key to our PK. And the production of Sharp + Pahlsson will be much less than Staal + any winger we put with Sid.
