Flyers sign David Sloane; Parent could be ready for Saturday (Apr. 11)

Crazy. Discuss....

Quote:
Thursday, April 9

3:00 p.m.
The Flyers have signed 6’4’’, 220-pound defenseman David Sloane to an amateur tryout under emergency conditions, according to club general manager Paul Holmgren. Sloane will replace defenseman Ryan Parent, who is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. Under emergency conditions of an amateur tryout, Sloane is available to play for a 24-hour period beginning with tonight's game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Sloane has been assigned uniform #40.??

"I just want to keep it simple and play my game,” said Sloane. “I want to get the butterflies out early, which I am sure there will be plenty of."

Sloane also signed an amateur tryout with the Philadelphia Phantoms on March 17, 2009, but has yet to appear in a game for the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate.??Sloane, 24, posted four assists and 37 penalty minutes in 35 games this year in his senior season at Colgate University, where he was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team. In 129 career games over four years at Colgate, Sloane recorded 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points and 100 penalty minutes.??

The Ambler, Pennsylvania native was a second round draft pick of the Chicago Steel of the USHL where he played during the 2004-2005 season, recording one assist and 12 penalty minutes in 17 games.

Thats actually a really good point, but they dont play till tomorrow. But still they may want to leave Syvret with the phantoms today for practice and stuff since they need to win their remaining games to make the playoffs

That has to be it. Because it surely can't be cap-related, right?

You and I are a better pairing than Jones and Alberts

I hope this kid plays a good amount of minutes. Honestly, I don't think he will. I'm sure Jones will be racking up the minutes. I swear if Stevens throws Jones with Kimmo I'll lose it at my job.

I really think thats a good point, considering playoffs = more games for JvR. I bet if they didnt have a player like JvR down there they woulda just recalled Syvret.

Jones will almost certainly be with Kimmo. Otherwise he'll be with Carle, with Coburn and Kimmo together. Unless Carle is put with Kimmo

True.
Rather see Kimmo with Coburn.
Put Carle with the new guy. Maybe?

So let's see...3 games left in the season, playing for home ice...

HALF our defensive core consists of a guy who hasn't even cracked an AHL roster, an INJURED Randy Jones (who isn't even good when he's healthy), and Andrew Alberts

Anyone else worried?

Why? The Flyers need to win this game. No matter how poorly you think of Jones and Albetrs, I'm certain that they're much more competent than Sloane.

The Phantoms played last night and they play both Saturday and Sunday. Four games in a row for Syvret would be difficult and the Flyers' brass definitely would like to see the Phantoms make the playoffs.

Interesting, hope he turns out to be a decent player. It'd be nice to get some insight on his game, but couldn't we have just called up Sbisa on emergency recall? Who knows though, maybe they saw something in Sloane and think he can be a competent 7th d-man down the road.

As did Jones. 5 shots in the 3rd period for the desperate Panthers, SOMETHING was going right with the Flyers defensive group.
