Canes vs. Devils - The Failboat arrives to carry us into the playoffs

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New Jersey Devils

Well, this is it guys and gals. Game 82. Who'd have thought we'd be in this position a few short weeks ago? Leighton gets the start which I'm not sure I agree with and Cullen remains out even though he's been cleared to play.

Carolina Hurricanes

Ruutu - Staal - Cole
Whitney - Jokinen - LaRose
Samsonov - Brind'amour - Walker
Eaves - Helminen - Conboy

Gleason - Corvo
Pitkanen - Babchuk
Wallin - Seidenberg

Leighton
Ward

New Jersey Devils

Parise - Zajac - Langenbrunner
Elias - Zubrus - Gionta
Shanahan - Rolston - Clarkson
Rupp - Madden - Letourneau?

Oduya - Martin
White - Mottau
Salvador - Greene

Brodeur
Clemmensen

Not totally sure on the devils lines but those are what I've been able to steal from their gdt's so far.

I have mixed feelings on whether I want them to win this game or not. Always nice to go into the playoffs on a winning note but a loss would likely get us a more favorable matchup.

This game only has one purpose to it:

Get LaRose his 20th goal.

Staal got 40, now it's time for LaRose to get 20. It would also be nice for The Anton and Corvo to score, which would give both 15 goals on the season

Would have been nicer for Ward to get his 40th, but oh well. Since the game really doesn't matter for either team, how about we work out this deal:

The Devils score 3 quick ones early, which gets Leighton pulled. Ward comes in, and LaRose, Corvo, Babs, and Eaves (because he's due) score to come back and get Ward that 40th win.

We'll even let the Devils choose their goalscorers, as incentive for agreeing with the deal.

Scenarios:

Win and they clinch 5th
-With Philly picking up at least 3 points, it's #4 Philadelphia vs. #5 Carolina
-With Philly picking up less than 2 points
----Pitt wins, it's #4 Carolina vs. #5 Pittsburgh
----Pitt loses, it's #4 Carolina vs. #5 Philadelphia

Lose (Regulation)
-With Philly picking up at least a point
----Pitt picks up at least a point, it's #3 New Jersey vs. #6 Carolina
----Pitt loses in regulation, it's #4 Philadelphia vs. #5 Carolina
-With Philly losing (in regulation x2)
----Pitt picks up at least a point, it's #4 Pittsburgh vs. #5 Carolina
----Pitt looses in regulation, it's #4 Carolina vs. #5 Pittsburgh

I believe that is all the relevant scenarios. There are a few more unlikely OTL scenarios that occur but I doubt they'll happen. All you really need to know is Carolina owns the tiebreaker over Pittsburgh and Philly and Pittsburgh owns the tiebreaker over Philly.

Cole needs 2 goals and Larose needs 1. So I'll say devils 4-3 would be ok with me. Really don't care whether we win this or not. Kinda hoping for 6th place to face the devils. Philly and Pittsburgh have been almost as hot as we've been down the stretch and minus our super hot streak they've been way more consistent for way longer.

I really don't like Cam sitting... Do you really want the last time he saw the ice before the playoffs to be 4 goals in 30 minutes? Plus, I consider this an important win!

Devils 4-3 in regulation suits me just fine. As long as those 3 are 1 for LaRose, Babchuk and Corvo, or LaRose and Cole twice. For the love of god do NOT win this one or even get a ****ing point. I want the 6 seed damnit. **** having to play Philly or Pittsburgh, I want the Devils damnit.

Yes, I do. Put a chip on his shoulder. Give him something to prove in the playoffs.

And how is this an important win? Philly has 4 points on the table still and one of their games is against the Isles, a garantueed 2. We're not getting home ice, so why not play for a far more favorable playoff matchup?

I completely disagree, but that's ok. I don't want to lose 2 in a row and be in 6th and play the Devils for the next two weeks... If we lose today we are almost locked into the 6th. I want the Flyers first and home ice second, so to ME it's an important game. That is just my thought process

The most important thing is that no one gets hurt. All potential 1st round opponents are tough, so I'm not going to worry too much about that part of it; though if I had to choose, I'd probably pick NJ as well. Don't all playoff runs have to go through NJ and Mtl somehow?

Would like to see LaRose get another, but does he cost more as a 20-goal man rather than a 19-goal man?

I don't really care about the result. Once the post season comes everyone starts at zero and its a different season.

However, I sure hope we look alot better than what we did Thursday, win or lose.

I completely disagree as well.

Why do you say they're not getting home ice? All it takes is a win today and a Philly loss to the Rangers.

Is Leighton starting more of a we don't want to play Philadelphia attitude or just rest the starter attitude?

I highly doubt Carolina is avoiding Philadelphia.

It's a "We don't Ward to catch Marty B syndrome" attitude. Having your goaltender going into the playoffs starting every game since January isn't exactly the greatest coaching move.

Rest... that and Leighton played fairly well in the Buffalo game when he was put in other then that completely ******** penalty shot.

Personally I want the Canes to play New Jersey, but with Pittsburgh controling who we have to face since their start is 4 hours after this one ends it's not a ducking move. A ducking move would have been saying "hey, Daniel Manzato, Albany's going to miss the playoffs so why don't you get a start for the Canes".

I'd be just fine with this one ending in regulation with us not having the highest score.(see, i didn't say i wanted us to lose) However, I agree that we need to look much better whatever the outcome of the game. I'm one of those that'd feel much more comfortable playing the Devils in the first round. I'm not scared of Philly, but I think it'd be a plus to have our players still able to still walk when we get to the second round... Anyways, here's to a good game!!!
