Update: Gilroy to NYR (post #106)

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklun...morrow/1/20584

Quote:
He plays his final game in college tonight. Matt Gilroy, Hobey Baker Winner and solid puck moving D-man is likely going to be signed tomorrow by either the Philadelphia Flyers or the Chicago Blackhawks. I was told this past week that the Flyers may be Gilroy's first choice.

Whoever gets Gilroy gets a absolute stud. He is the epitome of charactor and skill. He is a hell of a story as well....and he is NHL ready at 24.

I will continue to chase this.

Ek

It would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath on Eklund.

me neither but it would be great to get him and be able to lose Carle and Jones in the offseason, and Jones right now for that matter

I did make a post about this in the prospects thread, figured if I made a thread people would just say 'It's Eklund' etc.

Anyway like Hovercraft said there he tends to be better with Philly stories than some other teams at the least. He'd be a fit with the core of the team in age which is nice but cap figures I've spotted would almost definitely require Carle or Jones gone I would think, maybe not a bad thing in any case.

I don't know anything about him as a player however.

If we can sign Gilroy, we are going to have solid D depth for years to come.

Kimmo
Coburn
Parent
Sbisa
Carle/Jones (I see one being traded)
Gilroy
Marshall
--
Ratchuk
Bodrov
Bourdon
Syvret

Awesome if true. We could use someone like him, expecially if practically free. Anyone know a lot about him though? Other than the fact he won the Baker Award. Seems like every team wants him.

I don't know if we need to lose both Carle and Jones, but both of them don't need to be on the same team. We don't need Carle, Jones AND Sbisa on the same ice, and then if they're going to give Syvret a shot...it's too much. Their top priority in the offseason after getting the goaltending straightened out is trying to find a defensemen who is low-tempo, less flash, unspatacular offensively, just do the job in our end, and don't be a chance killer in the offensive zone. Bouwmeester may or may not be possible, Aucoin may or may not be possible. Ohlund, same boat Three guys: Niclas Havelid, Karlis Skrastins, Greg de Vries, maybe Jonny Odyua is he is let go (don't think he will). Mike Komisarek is a UFA, but I don't think Montreal is letting him leave.

I don't know if you've been watching Gilroy play, but he is in the same mold as the players you've listed (Havelid, Skrastins, Odyua..not so much de Vries dunno why you put him in that list). Obviously Gilroy is younger, unproven, etc..but signing him would be great and would provide good competition in camp next year for the 5/6 spot.

I also don't want Sbisa handed a spot on the team out of training camp. I know that it's going to happen, but it shouldn't. It's one of the worst things you can do to a young player and his ego. They talk him up so much, that may come into training camp and not feel like he will have to work as hard for a spot. He should still earn a spot on the team because he beat out guys like Gilroy (if he does sign), Marshall, Jones, etc., on his merits.

I know, but I don't want a kid who has never played a game to take that role without a proven veteran behind him. Gilroy hasn't played a loaded day-to-day game schedule, so I'm not expecting him or wanting him to play 82 games, the same with any rookie.

Odyua will be 28 when next season starts, so it's not like he is ancient. The other guys I mentioned are well into their 30s

Good point, since we saw it happen with Giroux early on.

I still think we need to deal one or both of Carle/Jones and Sign a vet, and then let everyone else battle it out.

We should try and sign Greg Zanon or Rob Scuderi

there could be a lot of guys out there looking for 1 or 2 year deals knowing that the cap is going to fall and they'll likely be able to get more in 3 years

I wasn't saying that a spot would be handed to Gilroy for the 5/6 spot. I agree that he might not be as NHL-ready as Ek thinks, but if he is..great. If not, a year with the Phantoms (or whatever team) wouldn't hurt and he'd still be young (at 25) and able to play the year after.

Don't know anything about him but it sounds interesting.

Also, Eklund, what the hell is "charactor"?

I think it's some kind of robot.

Does anyone know the circumstances of Gilroy not already having his rights owned. Late bloomer?

From Delco Times:

(Brian Burke's son?)

I spoke to an organizational source today that said the Flyers have sent amateur scout Patrick Burke to the NCAA championship game tonight in Washington D.C. between Boston University and Miami of Ohio.

While Burke is there looking at every player, there is one player in particular that the Flyers are looking at - much like many other NHL teams are - and that is Terriers defenseman Matt Gilroy.

Gilroy, 24, winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college hockey and BU captain, is a truly interesting story. Undrafted in 2003 because he was deemed too small, Gilroy has sprouted to 6-foot-2 in college and is older than most college kids, meaning he's physically more mature than most would-be first year pros.

Very interesting indeed. Would love to see this kid in orange and black but coming from Eklund im hesitant to believe. But the other sources make me feel better.

How many players do we have under contract right now? I seem to remember we were at the max...but that was months ago...could we even do this?

Well, Cabana went to austria and we waived Metro and Ossi. We also got rid of Eminger and Downie for Carle. JVR is the only contract I can remember being added. Should be a net-gain of three contract slots.

His [Gilroy's] game has blossomed while at Boston University, and many teams are now interested in his services.

But, the Flyers might have the inside track.

I received an e-mail this morning from someone close to the Gilroy hoopla who has said that Gilroy's camp has quietly made it known that the Flyers are tops on his list.
