Avs 09 Draft Talk

Figured we started a thread on this. Didn't think it belonged in anyone of the sticky topics but if it did, sorry.

As for the draft talk itself, right now the Avs have the 6th or 7th pick which gives us a shot at these players:

- Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi [MSP for short, unless you can type his whole name ]

MSP reminds me of prelock out Nazzy, Foppa to some, and Gaborik to others. Either way, he's is a speedy scoring dynamic player.

- Duchene

Compared to Toews in that he is the complete package at both ends of the ice and is looked upon for "game time" decisions.

- Kane

Can't really say, most say Iggy.

- Schenn

Compared to Richards in that he isn't afraid to drop the gloves, get physical and lay the hits as well as contribute offensively.

- Schroeder

A mixture of Kane/St. Louis, a small forward who has excellent offensive upside and the ability to succeed in the NHL despite his size.

- Cowen

Comparable to Coburn/Jbow in that he is tall, big, and is physical at times but can mustard players off the puck, defensive first, with the offensive output of 30 - 40.

Sadly, no Hedman or Tavares. So assuming we get worse, which is high possibly and more likely so than us getting better, as well as keeping our 1st rounder, assuming FG isn't that stupid, who'd you like to see and why?

At the risk of sounding ignorant, who is "MSP"?

I don't get to follow the youngsters as much as I'd like...

Sorry, MSP = Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi.
He is a Swedish player and dubbed MSP so people's fingers don't bleed trying to type that.

If we're in the 7-10 range, we should definitely get Schenn. He'd look fantastic along side Stastny once Duke and Smytty hang'em up. I love Schroeder, but he's too much of a pass-first player, similar to Stastny. And he's small/soft, think a small Tanguay...

He doesn't go offsides enough to be like Tanguay

our organization seems to love small forwards for some reason, so if we get a 6-10 pick and he's still available, I expect us to pick Shroeder

I don't see us ending with a top-2 pick, but if we're in the top-10 range I'm looking hard at Duchene, Cowen, Kane, Kassian in that order. I'm thinking Tavares, Hedman, MSP, will be the top-3, Cowen and Duchene figure to go in that range as well.

Duchene is freakin' money though, he reminds me a ton of Bure in terms of just crazy speed and stickhandling.

My picks are Schenn, Kane, or Cowen. In that order.

Are these all guys that will probably make the squad next year? Or are the descriptions/comparisons projected career-arc type things?

They are more comparable to playing styles. In that, the best player to comparable to the playing style of Schenn is Richards. Why? Because Schenn like Richards fights, hits and also able to chip in offensively. Not sure what career-arc means. If it meant what I just explained then yes, if not sorry.

As for my list I think the order of draft players will go something like:
Tavares/Hedman
Tavares/Hedman
Duchene
MSP
Kane
Cowen
Schroeder
Schenn

I would like the Avs my picks from first to last: Duchene, Cowen, MSP, Kane, Schroeder, then Schenn.
Hopefully we can have a shot at one of them.

I just can't wait to get one of these guys. Another defenseman might be nice, but honestly my prospect knowledge is limited. I couldn't speak intelligently about the skill of any of these guys; I haven't even seen their highlights, let alone see them play.

With hockey and baseball, I usually say pick the best available player regardless of position. Those prospects are typically 3 years away from being relevant, and it's not possible to predict team needs that far in advance. Even if they make it the next year, there is still always a need at any position except possibly goal.

It seems like hockey prospects take four to five years to develop.

Indeed you did. I looked around more and saw more videos, this guy is amazing.
I can't believe he didn't make it to the WJ's. Oh well, it won't hurt his stock at all though, be lucky if he made it past the 5th pick.

They may take long or less. They could make it to the NHL as little as next year but as for reaching their potential that will take longer. Look at Wolski, he made the team around 19 or 20 and he's still developing. The only three players that I can think of who will be considered to play in the NHL next season would be Tavares and Hedman with Cowen being the dark horse.

I heard Cowen sustained a major knee injury. This could hurt his draft stock and drop him a few spots.

Cowen or Duchene. Cowen because we haven't had a legitimate top 2 guy for a long time. Duchene because he would be the BPA.

Its almost similar with the first couple of teams except the Avs have Schenn and Leafs have Cowen.
After that, they separate but still a good idea of what the draft may be.
