Western Conference Quarterfinals St. Louis @ Vancouver | 7 PST/10 EST (CBC/Versus)

Canucks

VS.

Blues

Two of the league's hottest teams are set to match up against each other in Game 1 of their series tonight!

Northwest Division champs, the Vancouver Canucks, snatched the division title away from rivals the Calgary Flames in a race that was down to the wire, capping off a fantastic finish to their season. The Blues, not to be outdone, went from being contenders in the Tavares Sweepstakes, sitting in last place in the Western Conference, to battling all the way up the standings to sixth place, earning their first playoff berth post-lockout.

Both teams are hot, which should make for an exciting matchup.

Some things to mull over,

- Backes v. Bernier. Both were targeted by rookie GM Mike Gillis in the off-season, with Gillis tendering an offersheet to Backes and having to make a trade for Bernier when the Blues matched the offer. St. Louis returned the favor, signing Bernier to a similar deal after Gillis landed him. Is Bernier going to come up huge, wanting to show Gillis he was mistaken having him as his #2 choice? Are Backes and Bernier going to develop a rivalry as both try and outperform the other?

- The Sedins. The twins, who are unrestricted free agents this July 1st, have been criticized for their inability to produce in the post-season by fans, best exemplified with the Canucks series win over the Dallas Stars in 06/7 where they were shut out three times by Marty Turco. All eyes in GM Place are going to be on Henrik and Daniel, with the expectation that they have to take charge and lead the offense.

- Mats Sundin v. Keith Tkachuk. Two experienced, large forwards who have never had the opportunity to make it to the Finals. It's very possible that we could see the two matched up against each other. Tkachuk's been great for the Blues, despite being on their third line, while Mats Sundin has looked serviceable since he signed with the Canucks back in December. How much do these veterans have left in the tank?

- Frick and Frack. Also known as Alex Burrows and Ryan Kesler. After coach Alain Vigenault decided to split up his checking line and put the two on the top two lines, the Canucks haven't looked better this entire season. Given the Blues' reputation for being a hard checking, stifling team, though, could we see these two reunited with each other on the third line to help neutralize Patrik Berglund, who is starting to make a name for himself as a Canuck Killer? AV has stated that reuniting them is a possibility, so who knows.

Lines,

Canucks
Sedin Sedin Burrows
Kesler Sundin Demitra
Raymond Wellwood Bernier
Hordichuk Johnson Rypien

Salo Mitchell
Bieksa Edler
Ohlund SOB

Blues

Unfortunately, lines for the Blues are unavailable, due to them firing the first shot in the psychological war between the two clubs, as they opted to practice IN SECRET at UBC. If only they had played games prior to this series...

If you want the Blues lineup, I think I saw some predictions posted in the Blues vs. Canucks thread on the playoff board.

Anyways, good GDT.

I predict a 2-1 victory for the Canucks in overtime.

Less than 24 hours to go. Excellent.

Edit: Christ, I nearly forgot to make a prediction. Whenever I make a prediction we seem to have a better chance at winning.

Prediction! 3-1 Canucks

Burrows - Backhand off a breakaway (assist to Mitchell)
Sedin - Wristshot (assists to Henrik and Bieksa)
Edler - PPG Slapshot (assists to Sundin and Demitra)

GET 'R DONE BOYS.

Let the games begin!!! Got a new 46" HD TV last week, perfect timing I must say. Might bring it back for a 52 though, I think I should.

Go Canucks Go

As an aside, some dude on CDC actually got that first logo tattooed on his arm. Except it looks even worse.

On the CBC playoff preview, Scott Oake reported that the Blues went with the same lines they used down the stretch in practice today, so there shouldn't be any big surprises from either side.

So pumped.

Yeah, he used the old orca colors scheme, didn't he?

That thread was hilarious, as he kept getting defensive about the fact that he TATTOOED THAT MONSTROSITY ON HIS ARM.

I think it was the skate logo colours, I remember there being a lot of black. Just awful.

5-2 Blues

The Canucks are going to be overconfident and they'll trip over themselves. Blues will come out flying.

Also, if we're re-uniting Kesler and Burrows, do it when we have a lead.

I'd imagine that Kesler and Burrows would be reunited if we're running into problems against a team, not if we're winning.

It was a comment AV had made a while ago...I can't find it but if I do, I'll try to post it in here.

I have a feeling the Sedins are going to have a big game. Set the tone early. Even though they followed up with a lacklustre showing, Game 1 of the 2007 playoffs was great for both the Twins.

GO CANUCKS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I see both teams maybe being a little gunshy. While they both hate one another, they'll also respect one another and be cautious...maybe.

What's going to REALLY get me pumped is watching the intro and players coming onto the ice. No better entrance in sport. CBC better show the full thing, they're pretty good at doing that, and Pens/Flyers better not go to OT.

No chance CBC lets the Flyers/Pens game run over the start of the Canucks/Blues. This isn't the Leafs we're talking about...hopefully...

If there's one thing that CBC fails at in their playoff hockey broadcasts, it's the pregame, on ice intros and the fan reactions. That's been my main gripe about their playoff coverage. However, where CBC fails, YouTube picks up the slack.

They missed moments like this (from the 2006 playoffs):
