Looking Back at the Deadline.

Looking back do you think the Flyers would have been better off trading Upshall and a 2nd for a guy like a Bill Guerin(sorry his 2 goals are on the brain)? A veteren player who would be able to lead this team and play at a high level. I think this teams lacking something and I think thats it.

Mods, if you feel this needs to be moved into the Holmgren or Carcillo thread, my bad.

Didn't have the cap space to do that move.

Upshall's name should've never been mentioned in the same breath as "cap casualty" this season. Dumb, dumb trade.

But yeah, Lupul, Jones, Carle, and Briere are the real drains on our cap (well, Lupul will be next year). Three of them could've been moved and it would have helped a lot more.

As for Guerin...dude crosschecked a rookie in the face during practice. He has his own problems. He might look like a hero wearing the golden boys' jersey, but he's probably just as undisciplined and stupid in our jersey.

We could use some vet leadership, no question. But I still maintain this team needs a coach that can get these players playing as a cohesive unit to make up for their shortfalls in certain areas. Until that happens, we aren't winning ****.

I was kind of hoping the veteren would bridge that gap, make us look OK in the playoffs, then see Stevens get fired lol.

it sucks the only move we made was to dump salary. i'm completely emotional spent on this team. the whole year has been so up and down. i really hope we can keep knuble dump lupul and jone/carle and jvr can step up next year like giroux did at the end of this year.

I wanted, and still do, a veteran Dman who just plays Defense. The defense is way too young outside of Timonen.

We actually only gave up a Fourth to get Guerin. You guys could have kept Upshall and still gotten him, depending on cap room and all, of course.

I've wanted to weigh in on the shipping out of Upshall for a long time. As a longtime Penguins fan (and Flyer/Ranger/Crapital hater) , I was delighted when that trade went off. When I went to work the next day, several of us surmised that the Philly GM had lost touch with reality or had been hypnotized by Gretzky. Upshall was a player that I disliked immensely because he frequently had nice games against the Pens. Instead of seeing him in the playoffs, that trade sent him not only to the West but into complete hockey oblivion in the desert. I was doubly thrilled that Holmgren managed to swap him for a guy who should (by all rights) be a healthy scratch in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Truly, speaking an outside observer, your team needs a major front office and coaching overhaul. They've locked several players into contracts with no-trade clauses who have no business having those clauses and have traded youth and inexperience for, well, youth and inexperience. I would be screaming for the head of Ray Schero if he had done half the crap that Holmgren has done to you guys.

JXC's response to that should be enjoyable.

A lot of us have called Holmgren out. But sadly, the majority of people still think he's a god walking amongst mere mortals because of the summer two years ago when he had tons of cap room and brought the team back to respectability with it.

Flyers were locked for cap room, and if I'm correct they still are. Guys like Lupul and Briere are making 4.2 and 6.5 mil respectively...not worth it, at least not right now.

It doesn't help that Knubs contract is up soon along with both goalies. Best of luck.
