Colin Wilson

Hey guys. I am new here. I am using my "old" account however from YEARS ago. I am sure some of you will remember me from my days of moderating the yahoo! group ultra preds fans.

Anyhow,
Just a question for you guys,

How much upside do we see on Wilson? Yzerman type player?? Will he be a Predator next season or he still under contract to juniors??

Colin is expected to leave Boston University (NCAA) and make the jump to professional hockey after this season. Whether or not he makes the jump immediately to the pro ranks and signs a deal with either Milwaukee or Nashville upon completion of BU's season or waits until the start of next season is not known).

Wilson will probably get some time in both Milwaukee and Nashville next season depending on his performance at the summer camp and then training camp in the fall. I believe he is expected to be a full-time player in Nashville by the end of next season at the latest.

Someone I've recently started thinking about as a comparasion to Wilson would be Keith Tkachuk. Both are big guys that know how to use their size effectively, possess great puck and playmaking skills, and also have a knack for scoring goals. Guys that are not necessarily ever going to get major attention because they aren't flashy, but rather are key cogs on their team that make everyone around them better and are solid pieces to a team's foundation.

Colin Wilson is a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. We have all heard this will be his last year of college....nice finish, if it is

Someone should ask if he is bringing Matt Gilroy with him to training camp. Any chance the Preds are in the running for him?

gilroy will probably go to a high profile team like most other highly touted, undrafted free agents (brunstrom, leino, hiller, etc.)

But having wilson does give us an advantage, if they were close friends

Recap of interview with Wilson (4/16):
Wilson said that he has made a decision on his future and that an announcement would be made in the next few days. He didn't want to say it outright and was clearly uncomfortable with his answer as George harped on it, but the answer and a comment later about participating in training camp in the fall with the Predators indicated that he will be turning pro.

Colin said one of the biggest things he learned this season in college was simply that he needed to and has matured. Wilson said that he had always played with players in his age level and this was really an experience this season playing with guys several (some 4+) years older than him. He said that he learned a lot about what can and cannot be said in the locker room among other things and has improved his leadership capabilities from this experience.

When a question was asked about his relationship with Pickard (grew up together, best friends, hugged at draft when Pickard was selected, etc) he said that it was funny that they asked because prior to calling into the show he was on the phone with Chet and was continuing the conversation online during the interview. Said that Chet is in Milwaukee and he looks forward to getting the opportunity to play together at training camp in the fall.

Asked what he wants to work on this summer he said that the thing he has really identified is goal-scoring. He mentioned that watching NHL hockey that almost every goal is shot off a quick release (one-timer) due to the speed of the game and that he must improve his release to adjust to the speed of the NHL whereas in the NCAA he could stickhandle the puck a couple of times prior to releasing a shot. Also mentioned that he needs to continue to work on his foot speed to adjust to the speed of the game.

Excited about being named to Team USA for the World Championships starting next week. Mentioned playing with Suter as a fellow Predator and looks forward to the challenge of playing against a lot of NHL players. Didn't mention going to Milwaukee at all. In another question he talked about the length of the season being an adjustment from NCAA hockey, but countered that with his experience playing with the USNTDP for two seasons playing in 78 and 70 games respectively. Said he has learned and is committed to taking care of his body, eating right, getting enough sleep, etc. Mentioned that he subscribes to the Terrell Owens philosophy that your body is your temple, but (thankfully) that is as far as his affiliation with TO goes.

Wilson said that he followed the Predators closely this season online, especially as we went into full playoff push mode. Mentioned that he was excited after the win at Detroit and was disappointed after the loss at Minnesota the following night. Disappointed that the team did not make it in...

Finally, Wilson said that he believes he is very close to being ready NHL ready. Said a lot of work to be done this summer to improve his game for the next level, but thinks he is very close.

I hope not. He wants $3M a year.

Is he not subject to the same entry-level clause that previous UFAs (Leino, Brunnstrom) are? I know that Leino chose Detroit because of the status of the team and Brunnstrom chose Dallas because he was promised the chance at a top six role.

Nope ... he's 25 years old, he's not under the constraints of any kind of ELC

Wilson was the right pick for this team. He has it all - skill, smarts, body-type, work-ethic.....I really really hope he turns out to be the Rod Brindamour type that looks like he is becoming.

You guys got a special player. He did everything he could for us at BU, and will always be a great Terrier. Now he's off to make it big in the NHL. Good luck Colin, your legacy in the rich history of BU hockey is secure!

Awesome news

So excited for next season! Because even if he doesn't start here, it's a pretty good chance he will be here at some point during the season.

It will be fun watching the World Championships. Although I don't expect he will get a ton of ice time, it will be a great "stepping stone" for him leading into next season. The experience in itself for Wilson will be awesome!
Go Colin

I said it before but I'll say again, Wilsons pts should be pretty comparable to Jones this season if he sees the same TOI. Both we're nearly the same in pts in NCAA at the 3rd quarter of the season. Wilson may have streaked out I haven't checked. Both we're Hobey finalists. And it looks like they got similar deals if you look per year. I'm excited to see colin come. He'll get some time to shine for team US. Davis was there last year from the NCAA and got some minutes, so I expect colin will be treated similarly. Hopefully he tears it up...big jump though.

If Wilson's production is similar to Jones's, even as a rookie, it's a disppointment. They're two entirely different calibers of player.

Jones's best year, his HB candidacy year, came as a 22 year old senior.

Wilson's came as a 19 year old sophomore.

You're expecting too much from a teenager. By your standards, Thornton disappointed you. He turned out to be a pretty good player.
