I was browsing back through the pre-season Hab threads along with the General Discussion threads and was rewarded with many interesting topics and opinions. Standing out was how posters figured the overall standings would unfold and which players would be leading the league in various catagories. One poster picked that Tampa would be among the league elite so kudo's to him. Most picked the Habs to finish with around 25 wins, CJ would be gone by the All Star break and Gainey wouldn't make any impact. Ryder, Ribs and Souray weren't even on the radar back then and Saku's pre-season injury spelt doom for Les Habs. It's been a season of surprises and many pleasant ones I might add.
The Habs have surprised EVERYONE this year, maybe even themselves. I think the general consensus here on this board, with the more positive upbeat guys was... that if they stayed healthy the team would finish with around 85-87 points and be fighting for their playoff lives for the last spot... no one would of thought they would be doing as well as they are right now, not even the most rese coloured glasses type of fan. Some of the more negative people thought 10-13th position and we would continue to rebuild and weed out some of the deadwood...well we are rebuilding but some of our deadwood are playing quite well and then there's the unknown, Souray,Ryder,Ribs,Theo... I think we are all pretty happy with the season and we are all awaiting the playoffs with some hope!
In this one, it's funny to see how I was wrong about some things but i was on to something when it came to Koivu, Ribeiro, Ryder and even Perreault is getting to those totals soon. 224 GF? If we can score 30 in the next 8 games, we'll be up there. Some of us will be shaking our heads at how we fared. Medicine Twin set me straight; no way Ryder gets 47 pts! He was right, he's got 57 points... and counting!
Actually the '86 cup win was especially sweet since I made almost $300 betting on the Canadiens with friends and people from school, and when you consider I had just turned 16, and it was almost 18 years ago, that might as well been $2000, today!!!!
