Top 10 Canadian Fighters Ever (Sherdog)

1) Georges St. Pierre
2) Rory MacDonald
3) Patrick Cote
4) Carlos Newton
5) Mark Hominick
6) Sarah Kaufman
7) Denis Kang
8) Gary Goodridge
9) Sam Stout
10) TJ Grant

List is correct. Really disappointing though with the lack of overall talent. Patrick Cote is the only active UFC fighter on that list too. Zero top 10 Canadian UFC fighters.. Rory MacDonald is likely slowing down being a pro for like 10 years at this point and being in some serious fights. GSP may or may not be returning. Sarah Kaufmann is no longer in the UFC. Grant seems done..

For a country 1/10th the size of the US and 1/6th the size of Brazil, this list is about right. One all-time great and a couple of very solid contenders.

Only gripe with that list is Carlos Newton at 4 ... he should be at 2. Won the UFC welterweight title, lost it in one of the weirdest knockouts ever. Wins over Pat Miletich, Pele and Renzo Gracie. Take Carlos out of the time machine and Rory would crush him, but in his era, Newton was really special.

Man I thought Grant had what it took to be a top guy for awhile, it's really too bad concussions derailed him..

At the very least he should be ahead of Cote...

I feel like anybody from #3 to some on the honorable mentions list are pretty much interchangeable

I think I'd have Jason MacDonald somewhere in there, probably ahead of Denis Kang.

As soon as Shawn Tompkins died, he was absolute ****. That was so long ago too. If you watch him after, he was a vastly different fighter. Got away from body shots, from combos, and really wasn't a UFC level fighter after that.

Kang certainly had the talent as was evident during his PRIDE days. Was never the same after his girlfriends death prior to Bushido 13.

100% true. Tompkins died after probably one of the biggest moments of Stout's career (KO vs Edwards). He was 4-1 in his last 5 fights and the one he last could have went either way. He had 4 fight bonuses in those 5 fights as well. Stout was on fire.. and when Tompkins died.. the world came crashing down.

And then he had a child and he was even more cautious than before and it ended up getting him tagged even harder.

Stout was an incredible fighter and it's too bad we couldn't have seen him continue to grow. He could have easily become one of the top-3 Canadians of all-time.

Even still - 1 knockout of the night and 6 fights of the night to his credit. That's pretty impressive.

Tompkins was Stout's brother in law too, so that probably had an even greater effect on him. He probably could have gone to any camp he wanted, but can't blame him for staying home and training with Hominick.

Agreed... he's definitely gotta be above Cote, if not #2. He shoulda retained his belt for one more fight, and the Newton/Hughes ruling should have been overturned and ruled a draw or no contest, as both fighters were out. Not sure how one can be awarded a win in that situation - especially the challenger.

I thought maybe one of Aubin-Mercier, Laprise or Theodorou could eventually make it to this list, but not so much anymore. I still have a little faith for OAM though.
