Ghost of Playoffs Past

I find it very hard to believe that any player who ever finishes his Pittsburgh Penguins playoff career with only one point will ever play a more vital role to the team's success than Randy Gilhen. During the 1991 Patrick Division Finals against the Washington Capitals, the Penguins were trailing the game 6-5 and series 1-0 when a delayed penalty was signaled. As goaltender Tom Barrasso made it to the bench, an alert Gilhen noticed that no skater had taken his place. On a team featuring prolific scorers, I'm sure that many observers had a similar thought to the one later brought on by Max Talbot during Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals: Why is he the extra attacker? Also just like Talbot, Gilhen delivered a game tying goal that forced overtime. Mark Reechi took a feed from Paul Stanton and threw a shot towards Caps netminder Mike Liut. The shot hit traffic in front as Mario Lemieux, Joe Mullen, Kevin Stevens and Paul Coffey battled for the puck. Fresh off the bench, Gilhen came with speed to pick up the rebound out of Rod Langway's skates and fire a backhander into the goal.
(thank you "One from the Heart" VHS)

In overtime, Kevin Stevens tallied the game winner on a feed from Ron Francis which turned the series in Pittsburgh's favor. The Penguins won the next three games, coasting to a five game triumph over the Capitals. It turned out to be his only point in 16 games that playoff. Gilhen continued his contributions as a valuable role player and raised the Stanley Cup with the rest of the 1990-91 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Randy left the Penguins following the 1991 playoffs and would skate in 457 career NHL games, scoring 115 points while suiting up for the Whalers, Jets, Kings, Rangers, Lightning, and Panthers. Gilhen would also score 4 more playoff points but none was more important than the goal he scored on April 19th, 1991.

On This Date in 2008

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators met in the first round of the NHL Playoffs for the second straight year with staggering different results than 2007. Jarrko Ruutu scored the game winning goal in Ottawa as the Penguins completed the four game sweep to move on to the Eastern Conference semi-finals with a 3-1 victory. Evgeni Malkin tallied a power play goal in the second period and Sidney Crosby sealed the deal with an empty net goal with less than a minute remaining. Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves to win his first playoff series as an NHL goaltender.

I really hope that the third period let up from last game doesn't shift any kind of a tide. Its important that this game is played at the Pens pace so a strong start is the key to this game. Once again the Pens will need to wear that Flyers defense down and buzz around Biron.

Also it would be improtant to end the game strong. Make them go back to their building azz first.

Great GDT. Again .

Play with the same intensity we played the first period in game one and the rest will take care of itself. We are better than they are, and all we have to do is put in the work, execute and not give them bad turnovers and stupid penalties to feed on.

Great GDT PA! The only beef I have is that Guerin does not play for PHI sorry man I had to.

I can't believe I am going to miss the game tonight, but I can't pass up an opportunity to see FOTC! At least I can record the game.

Might be the last place in Pittsburgh I'd want to watch a hockey game. Although a house mix of Gloria Estefan might put you in the mood to pound some beers and bash some heads.

Great GDT and some great into...

It's pretty funny that Rick Tocchet is #8 in playoff scoring for both franchises...Here's to hoping he is #9 on the Pens list after tonight!

If anything I think the cheap shots might have kept our guys from getting too comfortable after the first game. I think our guys will come flying and looking to hit everything that moves!

Yeah, I don't really get the end of game "message sending". I'm sure Crosby and co. are going to be in the locker room before the game going "Now let's not score too many tonight, we don't want them hurting us..."

I thought Pittsburgh had the physical edge for the majority of the game, it's not like we're going to back down. And I agree, the antics at the end probably will get the Pens ready for Game 2 more than anything.

Philadelphia sports fans may be idiots, but the city itself isn't that bad.
