Rangers Sign Matt Gilroy - 2YR/1.75M Per

http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2009/0...se-to-signing/

"Monzo: I just got word that this is all but done. This is a huge deal for the Rangers and although he won’t be able to help them this season — it will certainly help them next season and perhaps effect what they do in the draft."

Matt Gilroy signs with NY Rangers

http://www.nypost.com/seven/04172009...yer_164913.htm

"The Rangers have signed Boston University free agent defenseman Matt Gilroy, winner of the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's best player, The Post has learned.

Gilroy, the 24-year-old who led the Terriers to the NCAA title last week, received serious bids from a half-dozen teams, notably including the Devils, Maple Leafs and Lightning.

It's believed the Long Island native, whose father, Frank, played basketball for St. John's from 1997-81, signed a two-year deal for between $4-5 million."

2-2.5 million dollars per year for an unproven player, wow. Burrows is potentially making equally or less than Gilroy is going to make, i am glad that the canucks didnt sign him.

lol beat me to it by one minute. So Rozy probably gone, one of Morris/Mara not re-signed most likely.

Well, the Rangers do seem well with developing the defensemen, so maybe this isn't quite so bad as it looks. Though I guess it makes it more likely that one of Mara or Morris is gone after the playoffs.

If he pans out, this makes Roszy expendable. I hope this turns out well. Big risk and a lot of $$ for uproven player but i guess this means we can focus on forwards in the draft.

Burrows is Jarkko Ruutu combined with Anson Carter

Wow. I figured we had no chance at this guy. It will be interesting to see how this signing affects what we do over the summer.

If you guys can bury him in the minors if this doesn't pan out, then I think its a great deal. From all accounts I hear, he's gonna be a good one. Still has to make the transition from College hockey to NHL though. Was really hoping he signed with the Canucks.

that is a decent chunk of change, especially when you consider how much bang for our buck we've gotten this season out of mara @ 1.9 million.

If he pans out, great. If he sucks, let him rot in Hartford or see if someone else claims him. Good move, IMO.

The problem is, with the cap problems the Rangers have, he won't even be able to crack the roster without moving someone else. How can you ease a rookie kid into the lineup when he's already making 2-3 million?

He'll have to play at least as well as a top 4 d-man, it gives him no easy starting point.

Well the dollar amount will certainly make sure Sather comes out either looking like a genius or a moron. Guessing by his track record I'm leaning toward moron.

I like collecting depth on D because it could make Del Zotto or Sangs expendable in a deal for an elite scoring forward. That is what we desperately need.

I do like the kid though, I watched the frozen four and he played well. Hopefully I'm wrong he comes right in and we can find a spot for em. I'd love to see him do well.

I doubt Sather would have committed to him unless he was confident that he could move Rozsival or had already decided he wasn't going to bring back Mara.

Exactly. At least Sather spent this type of money on a young kid, not some crappy UFA signing like this past summer.

That is the way people attempt to rationalize the Redden contract.

Gilroy wanted a 1 way deal

Reportedly,Toronto offered a 2 way deal

The Rangers have to re-sign Marc Staal and Dan Girardi by July 1,2010.What are they going to ask for when they just gave $4-$5 million for a college player?

I think there's 2 possibilities here. One, we keep Rozy, let Mara and Morris walk. Then Gilroy can play on the 3rd pair. Or two, we trade Rozy and resign Mara, who can play on the 2nd pair until Gilroy is ready (if ever).

If we keep Rozy then we'll have to get creative with our forwards. Maybe there is a market for Gomez.

So what kind of defenseman is this kid anyway? Offensive? Shut-down? Uber-physical?
