Great move. Puts us up against the cap so bad we just might have to waive Redden.

A+.

I'm thinking this will probably make Sanguinetti expendable, that is if Gilroy pans out. The cost seems high for an unproven 25 year-old-to-be for next season. If he can quarterback the power play next year then maybe this is a good signing. I still think it's too much for someone who has yet to play in the NHL and was overaged in college.

I hope that's the case but remember right now at 2-2.5 he already out earns Mara (1.9 I think).

I think he can move Rozsival eventually, and he's probably going to have to.

I wonder if Slats is thinking about a draft day deal to get rid of Rosie or Redden along with Bobby Sangs or MDZ in a deal, and signing Gilroy is to fill the potential youth d-man void? Our amateur scouts have done a pretty good job with US college talent, and the interest by all these teams certainly suggests he's worth a gamble.

I will also hazard a guess that if we bow out in round 1, Slats will clean house via buyouts and banishment to the Wolf Pack, and Gilroy may help fill out a very young d-corp.

As a big BU fan and a former BU season ticket holder, I am completely psyched. I believe Gilroy is the real deal, and can step in and QB our PP better than Redden and Roszi do now. On top of which he is a real character guy. I can't believe the Rangers landed him.

First, there were like 5 or 6 other teams with interest in the kid. What if they offered the same and he chose us since he's from Long Island? There are at least 5 teams not laughing right there. Plus, I'm sure more teams would have been interested if they had the resources that we do.

Second, let them laugh. Again, if he sucks, we stick him in Hartford for 2 seasons. $4-5M is not a big deal to Dolan, and as long as he is in Hartford, it won't be a big deal to us.

I fail to see the downside to this move.

This move has nothing to do with this year's cap, and we don't know who will be around next year or even what the cap number will be. And again, he doesn't have to count against our cap at all if he's no good.

He may have chose the Rangers since he knows they currently have nobody like him and he should get a lot of PP time next year.

I think because he's from LI played a big role, and the fact that we need someone like him so the chance of him staying in the AHL for long is smaller compared to most other teams.

Very excited to have him, and we'll see if Sather made the right choice by the end of the summer.

If it's one way, won't a portion of his contract hit the cap if we waive him?

Or does it not work that way?

If a player is waived and assigned to the minors,he doesn't count against the cap.

2 years, $3.5 million 1-way contract per TSN.

Quote:
Boston University free agent defenceman Matt Gilroy has signed a two-year deal worth $3.5 million with the New York Rangers.

It is a one-way contract however, he is not eligible to play for the Rangers in this year's playoffs. He will be eligible for free agency in three years.

Last week, Gilroy was named the winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the best U.S. college hockey player.

He followed that with a victory over Miami of Ohio in the national championship game at the NCAA's Frozen Four tournament.

One of the most sought-after free agent players, Gilroy scored eight goals and added 29 assists for 37 points in 45 games this past season.

The Flyers are not one of those teams. Trust me. We NEEDED this kid over Jones in our lineup. Good signing, I still hate you guys though.

No, one way contract just means that he gets paid the same whether he's in the NHL or the AHL, and he can't be sent to the ECHL. If he's in the AHL, he counts 0 against our cap.

Well the Hobey Baker is like the equivalent to the Heisman Trophy in College Foot Ball right? So I would hope he has some talent. How come he was never drafted?? It looks like he was the captain too. I guess with Chris Drury as well, the Rangers are attracted to B.U. players. Especially if they won the Hobey Baker Trophy. I'm thinking maybe both Mara and Morris are gone? I hope not. Maybe the Rangers think they can find a trading partner for Rozsival's services and Gilroy will play with Mara, and Potter will pair with Redden? IDK, what Slats is up too but here's a little clip I found for the heck of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8SmxQJT-Ps.

Probably because other gm's are not as stupid as Glen Sather to give Gilroy that much money.... gilroy is still unproven.

I come in peace...

Here's a quote from our boards...

Quote:
They're up against the cap already and are going to have to make some moves to accommodate a guy who hasn't played one day of pro hockey.
Any ideas???

Mike Mottau won the Hobey Baker too, so, let's just wait and see. Though the fact that so many teams were after him makes me think he will pan out. If nothing else, we kept the debbies from getting him

Didn't Mike Mottau win the Hobey Baker back in 2000?
