I miss Jason Smith

I'll admit, I was happy to see him go when he did. However, now I kind of wish we had kept him for another year.

Smith had almost everything that this current team lacks:
He was a big physical presence, and would wear down the opponents along the boards and in front of the net.
He was an experienced veteran that could be a role model to the younger players.
He was a key leader in the locker room who I believe did a lot to counterbalance Steven's passive attitude.
He had a ton of heart and always gave 100% to win.

I know that he has a bunch of flaws, but I think his value to this team was really underrated at the time.

I love how our team needs puck moving Dmen, so we shed all our physical ones and get mobile ones...

Then we need phyiscal dmen cuz we have only puck moving dmen..

Overcompensation seems to be the word.

But yeah, I agree with you, but depending on his price.

I miss Hatcher over Smith really. A healthy Hatcher with perfect knees would have given us the balanced defense we miss.

Meh. I hate Hatch so much. He was TERRIBLE. Smith was good if he had a smaller contract. Only big man that I actually liked...

Give me the 1999 version of Jason Smith and Derian Hatcher over Randy Jones and Matt Carle any day.

The guy had some meaningful hockey left to play, but his legs are shot.

We could only keep one of Hatcher and Smith, and since Hatcher was under contract they kept him hoping he would be ready to play some time this season. I would have prefered Hatcher over Smith, but the team dearly needs a player like him.

I miss Smith too. He was one of my favorites pre-Flyers. I was very excited about that trade. Comsummate nails defenseman

Hatcher smashed fools. I loved when he creamed Green last year, and he boarded that Hab, and hit destroyed Lupul.

As much as I've hated him and had my share of laughs at his lack of mobility in latter years, Hatcher in the playoffs last season at least made me worried about the health of our players as well as providing a stern warning to get frisky around the crease.
He brought a meanness that is ultimately key to have on the blueline in the playoffs. You miss him I think, even that immobile version of what he used to be that was there last season.

This team definately lacks some toughness on the blueline. I think Sbisa can/will be that type of player for this team, but that's probably 2-3 years away.

He was a good motivator and one hell of a physical presence, but the Flyers couldn't have afforded him.

Although Ottawa missing the playoffs didn't really relate much to the signing of Jason Smith, I'd agree that these aren't his best days.

I think you forget how bad the Smith-Modry combination was in the playoffs last season, especially in round 1. Weren't they on the ice for 10 of the first 11 goals Washington scored or something ridiculous like that?

I hope you're trolling.

He was excellent to have around, but his knees were on borrowed time.

I loved the guy. Everyone did. But sometimes he made Knuble look like Flash.
