Laliberté is not interested anymore

http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/273286.html

http://www.cyberpresse.ca/sports/200...-daffaires.php

Laliberté will not get involved any further about the acquisition of the Habs

He was part of the early talks but decided to drop out because he feared having too much feelings towards the habs.

Thanks... of the guys/corps on your list I only have minor opposition to Quebecor. I think any of the others could be solid potential ownership.

those are the ones who are supposedly talking with Jacques Menard from BMO.
Serge Savard is talking directly with Gillett

Savard and Menard don't get along

Savard must be the face of an investor group. If his group is successful it seems to make sense he'd replace Boivin with himself.

On the ohter hand, Savard doesn't really have a business acumen like Boivin so maybe he doesn't replace Boivin. Savard does have a hockey acumen...

I think this deal will have to get done/announced as soon as the season ends. If new ownership wants to make any changes at all they'll have to be put in place virtually right away considering the agenda we have going into the summer. Maybe they come in and give the incumbents a years parole.

This could be the busiest off-season we've had in quite awhile.

I seem to recall hearing that Angélil, the Bronfmans and the Quebecor guy were going to make a joint bid.

Wow.... I am soooo surprised.

A local investor who pulls his offer just when it is time to get down to business.

Somehow, when all the local potential owners fold before it is time to pay the bill. it will be the faut of those pesky outsiders sealing our birthright.

Or maybe, it is because Gillett is not willing to sell the whole package and wants to still control 51% of the team.

Who would be ready to settle for 30 % ? Molson also control the last 19%.

I don<t see many investors willing to have only 30% control of the club, and still have Gillett in their legs.

As for Savard and his group, they are supposed to have a Vancouver billionnaire backing them.

He is a smart man, Laliberte

Quebec will hound him into the ground and stomp all over his broken body when things go poorly...

So I guess it is ok for an investor to not want the spotlight of the Candiens, but when a player does not want to come here, he is too soft, or using the Habs to drive up his personal profile.

I am not saying that he (or any other) local investor is obliged to step up and buy the Habs, but I wish they would either do it or not.

This last second "ah... it didn't work out, but thanks for the media exposure" stuff makes my skin crawl.

Savard made most of his money in race horsing and real estate. I think he has excellent business and hockey acumen. He is the last Montreal GM to assemble a Cup winning team, so I'd leave Boivin where he is and if Gainey decides to move on, I think Serge would like another go around with the GM hat.

Yeah no big surprise. I said the exact same thing when they announced the team for "for sale" (wich isn't entirely true from what Gillett says). Some argued he was in a bind and had to sell thinking he would sell at bargain prices. Not likely.

Of course many showed interest, you have nothing to lose and you can even get some free publicity from being associated with the Habs even for a brief period of time.
But even with his supposed financial problems GG is probably trying to make a huge profit from selling his parts in the Habs, I wouldn't be surprised if he asks for more than the amount the club was evaluated at. Why? Because he can. He owns the team, he can do whatever he wants.

I bet the club (or the part of it that GG is willing to part with) will end up in the hands of someone outside Quebec, maybe canadian but not from the province.

i have the impression that La Presse makes propaganda in favor of Serge Savard buying the habs cause they really don't want Quebecor to buy it and ban them from the lockeroom.
