With the players expected to leave LA via free agency and the additions we should expect come training camp, I think the Kings will be fine if they stay put for the most part. However, I think DL might be enticed to do something at the draft or on July 1st in order to shore up a few things on the back end and up front. The Kings can't go into the spring next year with a shortage of good top 6 defensemen and top 6 forwards like they did this year. I think the back end will shore itself out.

IMO, I'd be happy with...
+ UFA defenseman like Hamhuis, scoring forward via trade like Patrick Sharp, Brayden Schenn, Andrei Loktionov, Vyacheslav Voinov, Kevin Westgarth
- Jarret Stoll, Every UFA minus Frolov & Parse

Parse is an RFA.. Frolov's gone, thank God, we need someone who's consistent and can put up big numbers. Alex Frolov had the worst year this season and you'd think he would play his best since it's a contract year, pfft. Schenn & Clifford almost made the Kings team out of training camp but Schenn's team was hosting the Memorial Cup and Clifford needed another year of junior. I wouldn't be surprised if both these guys made the big club next season.

Hamhuis or Volchenkov would be nice pickups, even Willie Mitchell

That is pretty much where all of my questions lied. With this season's RFA's. They are still marked as RFA's on the salary charts, but on the free agent lists http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=17 has them listed as UFA's now. Can't tell if that is after their next contract, or right this minute.

Back to the subject of Marleau...

With everyone seeing our obvious lack of speed come playoff time and lack of 5 on 5 scoring, what do you guys think of bringing him on board now? I understand he only has three playoff points. Bearing that in mind, if anyone's interested, what should his contract look like?

I would stay away from any San Jose Sharks players that Doug Wilson just lets walk out the door. Especially those that have been PPG players the last 2 seasons.

Marleau seems like the most likely choice out of any options Lombardi has-and he has a ton. 3 years, 24 million, 4 years 28 million is where I think he ends up financially. Marleau made 6.3 last season and there are almost no top free agents on the market this summer so he's going to get paid. Kovalchuk would be nice, obviously, but he doesn't fit into Terry Murray's system and Lomabrdi will have to win a bidding war which he has never done. I'll call Kovalchuk to Detroit right now, they have the money and they need to re-stock. Kariya would be an interesting choice on LW. Teemu is out there but the Kings already have Brown and Simmonds. Scott Niedermayer anybody? He could stay close to home and partner with fellow Canadian Drew Doughty to anchor the best d combo in the NHL, would make the Kings instant cup contenders.

If the sharx had lost in the first round, I could see Marleau becoming a king. However, with their recent success, I don't see Marleau coming here.

No biggie. We have Kovy.

With Schenn, Richardson, Stoll, Williams, Moller, Parse, Clune, Westgarth I don't see any room for signing bottom 6 wingers. Colby does fit into the style of players Lombardi and Murray have been going after the last 2 years, just a matter of where he plays and who's spot does he take?

How high do you guys value Smyth over here?

I was thinking a trade around Souray for Smyth.

Souray for Smyth could really work.

I'd rather pay Souray 5.4 for the next two seasons than Pay Smyth 6.2 for the next two. Especially if the Kings plan to make a run at Kovalchuk.

I could also see the Oilers doing this for PR purposes, coming off one of the worst seasons in recent memory they could use a fan favorite like Smyth. Some might say they are better off getting youth for him, but you do need some veterans on rebuilding teams like Handzus and OD showed here.

But would Smyth waive his NTC to go back to rebuilding Edmonton?

Doughty
Johnson
Souray
Scuderi

Would be a very nice Top 4 for next season, and it lets Greene play a meaner, tougher role on the 3rd pairing with someone like Voynov.

If the Kings were to acquire Kovalchuk, I would be all for Souray for Smyth; however, I am not entirely sure, when considering the concept of reality, how that will all play out with Dean's concept of worth ethic

The Kings would have to throw in a prospect & draft pick with that deal to make it work. Probably Hickey and a 2nd?

No way.

Souray's coming off an injury and oilers want to rid of him as much as he wants to leave. We may throw in a 3rd or 2nd at the very most but no way do we include Hickey.

Why would they want Smyth at a higher cap hit? I'm sure they could get a better return from another team.

Well for one, he's a fan favorite in EDM and he'll probably be wearing the "C". Besides, like I said, they want to get rid of Souray so it isn't as if they're trading from position of strength.

Why? The oilers want Souray gone and why should the kings over pay..
Maybe we give the rights to Jones and a 7th.

Parse, Gauthier, Piskula, and Bagnall are due to become Group VI UFAs July 1 (for skaters, players 25 and older who have played 3 or more professional seasons with expiring contracts and have played less than 80 NHL games - CBA Article 10.1 (c) (i)).

I disagree.

I don't think either one has very much value. This is more a deal of two bad contracts.

The Kings might do it because they have a major hole on defense and they are looking at paying someone 4+ a year to be the #3 d-man anyways, so why not add Souray and unload Smyth's bad contract.

The Oilers might do it because Smyth is still very popular there, they need some good PR after this disaster of a season and he could be a good mentor to their young forwards.

I think the biggest stumbling block to this deal would be Smyth's NTC. I think Smyth knows he probably has 2 years left and would love to win a Cup. Don't see the Oil being contenders anytime soon.

Could care less about the other guys, but I think Parse is gone if this is true. To bad, I really think he could be a 15-20 goal guy who could fill in on a scoring line in a pinch.
