Must Keepers-
Lundqvist
Dubinsky
Callahan
Staal
Korpikoski
Girardi
Sjostrom
Betts
Zherdev (despite what you all think, even on a bad scoring team he was still our best and most consistent player all year, minus the playoffs)

Tweeners-
Avery
Antropov
Morris
Mara
Orr
Drury
Gomez
Valliquette

Get Run out of Town-
Redden
Rozsival
Naslund

i know i know, its the dudes first playoff series. the last couple of games hes been a lot more proactive, he still has a few kinks to workout but the dude is still only 24, and he has a world of talent. imagine if we were able to somehow get a player who can really get a lot of chemistry with Z? maybe even someone whose more of an elite player and i think zherdev would shine. the only way i let him go is if we were able to get a couple of high draft picks for him. i would do a 1st rounder and a legit prospect.

i also think a year under torts can do wonders for the kid. if you think torts mishandles players then idk about you but he definetly helped develop lecavelier into the player he is today.

At least your team managed to make the playoffs, and not even in the last seed. It's not like you got swept the first round either, I mean if you do lose it will only be by one game. As for the Wild, Owen Nolan (37 yrs old) scored the most goals for our team with only 25. Enough said. But I can see where you're coming from.

long time lurker, first time poster...gonna give you my six...

I think what the list shows is something everyone already knows...the big money guys are no where near the amount they are being paid, thus many discount their value.

I'd keep, depending on the price of course, whether they are RFA, UFA or signed already for next season. So for the list sake, assume they are market value and not overpaid...but of course we got Slats to ensure overpays:
Girardi
Korpi
Dubi
Gomez (yes, contradicts my above statement re: $$/market value)
Staal
Lundy

That said, Korpi was brought along TOO fast. I know he proved his ability at the AHL, but why not use what DET uses...bring them along to the point they are overprepared for the NHL so when they step in, the learning curve is minimal. Korpi, though very talented, has gotten up to the NHL in terms of skills/goalscoring. Currently, effective, but had they waited, and been patient, come next year, he'd step in and be far more present on the score sheet.

Yup, left off Cally, why? Because I'm a big believer you build through the middle, goalie, defense and centers. Believe Korpi will be a good center in the NHL, but needs to work on strength on defense down low. Right now, he'd be too easy to push off by a bigger forward. Gomez and Dubi hold their own.

Mgmt, is forever in the if we make the playoffs, that's good enough.

Certainly nothing new in this post that many don't notice.

would be my list of keepers. Mara can go, hes nothing more than a 3rd pairing D-Man, and way way overrated on here.
i agree. i dont see whats so great about mara. hes really slow and like someone pointed out he takes a lot of stupid penalties.

We don't exactly have the most mobile defense, Mara is a hell of a lot quicker than Redden, and not much slower than Girardi or Rozsival. I don't believe Morris is exactly speedy either. Only difference is that if someone is crashing the crease, Mara will put them on their *****. If Mara gets the puck and is in position to put it on goal, he does it. And most of all, he is always the first to stick up for his teammates. I don't remember him being very awful on the penalties. And also, in the defensive zone, he is probably the best on the team at pinning the guy to the boards and separating them from the puck.

He's very underrated, I can't see how you don't love the guy.

Hank

Dubi
Callahan
Girardi

Thats my five. I still with Sather could somehow move Rozsival, Naslund and Zherdev over the offseason. Too soft overpaid.

i have reasons for dividing it up this way, which i will get to in a blog entry i had planned to do anyway following the season...

Must Keep:
Staal
Girardi
Lundqvist
Dubi
Callahan
Korpi
Avery
Antropov
Zherdev Yes, Zherdev. Incredibly short sighted to give up on this kid the way most of you have.
Vally

Absolutely must try everything humanly possible to get rid of:
Gomez
Drury
Naslund
Rozsival
Redden

Don't care either way...
Betts
Sjostrom
Orr
Morris
Mara

Lundqvist
Staal
Callahan
Dubinsky
Korpikoski (showed some good skill in playoffs, could be ready for an offensive breakout next year)

I like Girardi too but am limited to 5, we have some good D coming up the pipe.

I think what they do in the off season depends a lot on game 7. If they win they can justify bringing some FA back

otherwise even though they have been productive they need new faces so Mara, Betts, Orr could be just go. I think Morris is a for sure given the price tag

A Rozy trade really makes sense to save cap space and shake things up

one full yr with Torts will be interestting

Will Zherdev be signed then moved?. Antropov resigned?

Anisimov, Byers, Sauer, Potter, can they make the team. Gilroy in for sure?

I think whether we like it or not they will have much of the same group

Naslund, Gomez, Antropov(if not someone else will be signed as a FA)
Dubinsky, Drury, Callahan
Avery, Anisimov, Zherdev
Sjostrom, Korpikoski, Byers, Voros

realistically they won't do much and they can let all their UFA's walk upfront if they chose too(save money)

I think Rozy and Naslund can be moved

only one year on Naslund and Rozy is not that crazy on the cap for what he does

no chance in hell in moving Drury, Gomez, Redden, have to live with it and pray some young kids come up and do well

Keepers--Lundqvist, Staal, Girardi, Dubinsky, Callahan, Avery, Korpikoski.

would like to see back:

Antropov--not having a great playoffs but the Rangers sure can use his size and skill. I wouldn't break the bank for him--keep it under $5 mil per.
Orr--he won't cost much and he's good at what he does.
Sjostrom--a hard worker and very good skater.
Zherdev--most talented and most enigmatic forward we have--I'd either trade him--expecting a very good return or qualify him. If he stays it's no more than $3 mil. He's got to earn the bigger money.

On the fence:
Rozsival--he's a bit overpaid but not as bad as some. I'd move him if I could get a good return.
Gomez--like how he gets the puck up the ice but prone to bad mistakes and we've never found a finisher for him which negates his best attributes. If we can--move him.
Betts--the head injury doesn't help. I think he's going to be pushed by someone from Hartford soon as well.
Valiquette--he's fine in his role--as long as he doesn't cost too much.

get rid of if you can:
Drury--fat chance with his contract--one of the worst in the league. As this season shows he's not captain material--a good penalty killer but average defensively and on faceoffs. Inconsistent offense two seasons in a row.
Naslund--he's capable of putting 20-25 goals away but too much of a perimeter player.
Voros
Mara--hate to say it because he's a good teammate and a hard worker but he's worth about what he got this year and I don't think we'll be able to afford it next and with a lot of depth in the pipeline there's no way you'd want to sign him for more than a year. Best if he goes.
Morris--Not going to get another $4 mil per year from anybody. Still a good player. IMO better than Mara but I don't see him fitting in that well in the future.
Redden--horrible contract. Another 5 years?!? Help!! He's been better during the playoffs but I don't see him getting any better in the long run.

Why would anybody pick Zherdev, he has been a bust for every team he has played for, he is way to cocky for a player that sucks as much as he does

bust? lol the guy LED OUR TEAM in points, and was 2nd on the team in goals for. Antropov doesnt count because 90% of his offensive numbers were accumulated for another team.
Zherdev was 3rd on the team in PPG, 3rd on the team in GWG, 2nd in shooting %, 2nd in +/-..

And all of that with the 11th highest Time On Ice per game...

Oh yeah, and he did all of this while having the 7th highest cap hit on our team!!!!

If thats a bust, what the hell do you call Naslund, Gomez, Drury, Redden, Rozsival?

Those are the problems here, not Zherdev..not by a huge, giant, long shot.

Zherdev likely wont cost more than 3 mil a year...id give him a 5 year deal at 15-18 mil in a hearbeat.

I'd also like to keep Korpikoski, Sjostrom and Avery.. I dont care about the others. Well, I suppose we could give some more time to Zherdev, too.

Yeah - it's real important that Zherdev played "OK" during the regular season - playoffs don't really count for anything.
