GDT: TOR @ PHI 7:30pm on ESPN

vs.

GAME: Toronto Maple Leafs (39-23-9-3) at Philadelphia Flyers (37-17-14-6).

TIME: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

The Philadelphia Flyers eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs in a physical and grueling seven-game playoff series last season.
Another playoff meeting between the teams this season may not be so close.

Philadelphia - seeking its first four-game regular season sweep of Toronto - looks to take another step closer to the Atlantic Division title when the Maple Leafs visit the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers have dominated the Maple Leafs this season, winning all three meetings by a combined 16-2 score. Including Game 7 of last season's Eastern Conference quarterfinals, Philadelphia has outscored Toronto 22-3 during a four-game win streak.

Following a 3-3 tie at Pittsburgh on Sunday, the Flyers flew to Amelia Island, Florida for three days of relaxation designed to bring a team with several new players closer together for the stretch run.

"It's always a good situation to do something like this," defenseman Danny Markov said. "This is good stuff. Just go away. Go away from the big city, from Philly to a small place. It gives us a chance to talk to each other."

Philadelphia comes back from its vacation with a comfortable lead over New Jersey in the Atlantic and trailing Tampa Bay by one point for the best record in the East. The Flyers are unbeaten in four straight overall (2-0-2) and have a six-game unbeaten streak at home (5-0-1).

Robert Esche - Philadelphia's undisputed starting goalie - has been outstanding lately, allowing eight goals during a personal 4-0-1 run. Included in that span are two victories over Martin Brodeur and the Devils.

"What I'm doing is, if it is my time, I'd be cheating myself if I did put more pressure on myself," Esche said. "I don't want to put any added pressure on. The team, the media, the fans are going to do that. I don't want to go out and say, 'This is my time and I don't want to go out and screw it up.' Because if I do that, then I'm screwing it up."

The Flyers are still without injured centers Jeremy Roenick and Keith Primeau and defenseman Eric Desjardins.

It looked like Toronto would be very difficult to beat after acquiring future Hall of Famers Brian Leetch and Ron Francis, but four losses in six games have dropped the Leafs three points behind Boston for the Northeast Division lead.

After scoring four unanswered goals in a 6-5 overtime victory at Buffalo on Monday, Toronto returned home Tuesday and lost 2-1 to the Bruins on ex-Leaf Travis Green's goal with 7:29 to play.

"We've got an ugly act right now," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said. "That last goal is exactly what's causing us problems. We lost the battle along the boards and then lost the battle in front of the net. That's not playoff hockey."

The Leafs also have injury problems. Missing from Tuesday's lineup were forwards Darcy Tucker and Mikael Renberg and defenseman Ken Klee.

It's the final game of the season between two great teams. The Flyers have won all 3 games this season, I believe they will make it four. No word on whether Rex is playing after getting a puck in the foot from JR. The team should be well rested after their little trip down to FLA. The Leafs just can't seem to get their game together when they play us. Also, add to it that this week it took an OT game to win against BUF and they lost against BOS, they don't look too tough right now. I believe we will see the sweep happen tonight.

Flyers 5
Leafs 1

FYI: Someone finally acknowledged that Esche is our starter, took freaking long enough!

Rex has been quiet as of late. Philly is a well coached team and if they play their team game it won't matter who Philly has on the ice. Zhamnov and his line can get two goals and the rest would be upto Esche and the team game. Watch out for Mats in the third and it's ours for the taking.
Philly 2 (Brashear, Fedoruk)
Toronto 1 (Domi)

I have a gut feeling Toronto will come in and play dirty hockey tonight to make a statement. But they will likely forget that we have the best PowerPlay in the league and we'll make them pay everytime. Let's catch up to these Bolts. This is our year to win.

Flyers 4 (Zhamnov, Gagné, Handzus, Ragnarrson)
Toronto 1 (Leetch)

This is a good measuring stick game.
Let's just hope we don't suffer any more injuries.

This is a must win for Toronto. They can't go into the playoffs without a win over Philly.

It's certainly your best chance.

I'm sure Mats will be glad not to see Primeau lined up against him 25 times tonight.

Leaf troller here for just a second to wish an injury-free game for both sides.

And to tell you that even though you have clearly dominated every game thus far between us, your perpetual goaltending problems (like our perpetual defensive defenseman problems) are what stand between you and the Cup. Unless either Esche or Burke uncharacteristically can play consistently well, you will not make it, despite your superior coaching.

As for tonight, I am not wildly hopeful about beating you in your own arena, but if we can cut down on defensive mistakes (big IF) our goaltender can beat yours, which is our best chance.

Hope Recchi is OK for the next game but not for tonight. He kills us!

Good luck the rest of the way after tonight.

Our goaltending won't be what stops us this year, Chico is in a zone right now. It will be a superior team.

The Flyers are unbeaten in four straight overall (2-0-2) and have a six-game unbeaten streak at home (5-0-1).
Robert Esche -- Philadelphia's undisputed starting goalie -- has been outstanding lately, allowing eight goals during a personal 4-0-1 run. Included in that span are two victories over Martin Brodeur and the Devils.
The Leafs have lost 4 of their last 6 but are a very decent road team.
We've outscored these guys 22-3 including game 7 of last year's playoffs.
I think if we score early, they will panic and open up their D whcih will lead to more and more goals for us.

Our problem with goaltending is no longer perpetual. It's no longer a problem. We have a very solid, young goalie ready to show everyone that Philly is the real deal this year. That's all Esche has done this year is play consistently well. Despite injuries that has happened to our defense and our offense, he has lead the way with his consistent play. He doesn't get rattled at all. He has gone up against the best and has come out the winner. Add to the fact that we have upgraded the defense with Markov, Timander, Malakhov, Pitkanen and Rico coming back soon, it only betters our chances. Then add JR & Primeau in with the forwards we have, we just became a harder team to beat. If anything, we have the best chance out of all the teams.

Esche has played consistently well all season, so for him to continue to do so would be anything but unchararistic. He's also played better, or at least seems to be playing better, since he's been back from injury.
