Why do people bang on the glass?

Something I have noticed this year is people constantly banging on the glass. It is even encouraged in that stupid add for the NHL network.
Why do people do It?
The players don't hear it. The only people who hear are at home watching the game on TV.
These people are F'in MORONs!
I get a headache listening to it.

You just realized that fans bang on the glass? Where have you been for 50 years? It's an emotional release. Get over it.

As a person who used to have seats in the front row....you do it because it's there. Caught up in the moment type thing. I was never one to do it all the time, but there are times you just can't help yourself.

Now people who leave their beers against the glass on the dasher, they are MORONS. LOL

I've never had front row seats, so I haven't done it.

However, I love it.

It's part of hockey.

It's almost like fan interaction, and a show of intensity.

I think we have someone here that has a problem with jealousy? Just because you have never paid to sit behind the glass don't take it out on us. Banging on the glass is unique to hockey, god forbid fans get excited!

....and why do you think "the players don't hear it"...?

If you are playing along the boards and someone is smashing the glass right in front of your face OF COURSE you hear it, lol

Will I get an infraction for calling this the worst thread since the "Fire Julien" thread? If so, then nevermind.

The players might notice it when they're on the bench, or at a whistle or something. If everyone is doing it and it gets to the point of resonating throughout the arena, then you take notice of it, but more of an environmental change. When you're playing along the boards, it is just white noise.

Funny story though.....

We went to a Oilers game about 10 years ago and Theo Fleury was with the Hawks. The was a bunch of Pee-wee players all dressed up in their Cap sweaters along the glass in the corner.
During the game Theo collided with someone in the corner and lost his glove. There was a stoppage of play and while Theo is getting up and all these kids start banging on the glass, Theo glances at them and before he puts on his glove he gives the kids the finger.
The kids immediately stop banging the glass with their jaws dropping.

I think I may go to the library rather than a playoff game, much quieter there, yes much quieter.
