Lecavalier or Thornton

If we could get one of these guys, who would you rather we go after?

The one who if he had a chance might actually show up in the playoffs.

Joe Thornton:

Pros:
Good contract
Playmaker would make our young wingers much better and help them develop
Great size

Cons:
Not an elite goalscorer
Goes away in the playoffs
Would cost us a lot in the way of players/prospects & might not even be avail.

Vinny Lecavalier

Pros:
Balanced scorer (goals and assists)
Would work well with Tanguay
Not afraid to get dirty
Is avail & probably wouldn't cost as much on the player/prospect side

Cons
Terrible contract
Not great in the playoffs either
Not an elite playmaker
Health could be a concern

Is this for real? Vinny no contest, don't know how anyone could pick Joe.

I would agree except that contract is awful. And i think Thornton would help Kostitsyn's development a lot more.

Thornton is under contract for two more seasons at 7 mil. Vinny is under contract for the next decade.

Thornton:

- Good contract
- 235 pounds
- More than a point per game every season since lock out.
- Center
- 29 years old
- (maybe no choke in playoffs with change of scenerie)

But wait, ZOMFGBBQ he no speaky speaky frenchy.

I'm shocked that its 10-2 Vinny actually.

I know that Joe hasn't been great in the playoffs but Vinny isn't that much better actually. And the difference in contracts is just nuts.

I think I'd actually go with Joe but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.

Btw, Lecavalier: 2 non point-per-game seasons since lockout.

This season was especially bad.

I don't want to pay him 10M per year from '09 to '15.

Okay,

You've convinced me. That's a horrible deal. I'm going with Joe.

Depending on what's given up I go with Vinnie. Let's say it's an equal payment to get either one, but the Kost bros are involved. That leaves the team with wingers that are more playmakers than goalscorers so Vinnie is the way to go because he'd be the one to convert the chances. I also think that a Pacioretty Thronton Andrei line would be absolutely sick though if we were able to keep them. For the team right now I take Vinnie though because goalscorers are needed much more than playmakers.

Andrei scored 26 and 23 goals in his first and second full seasons in the NHL ...... with Plekanec. Imagine what he could become with Joe.

I wouldn't touch Lecavaliers' contract with a 10' pole. I hope the Habs organisation does the same, he'd almost be crazy to ask for a trade to Montreal and saddle himself with all that extra pressure. Instead of staying in Tampa Bay and riding out the storm for the next few years and hope they can come back strong to challenge once again, that is if the team can continue to pay him.

His development would be accellerated 10 fold.

Thornton is 2.5 mil cheaper per year over the next two seasons and then he's a FA. Lecavalier is 10 mil over the next SEVEN seasons. And in his 8th season he'll be making a million more than Thornton will next year.

I don't see how anyone in their right mind can vote for Lecavalier except that San Jose would want a ton of players for Joe. Otherwise its a no-brainer here.

Voted for Joe for two reasons:

Better player, better contract.

Both contracts come up to about the same as far as cap hit goes.
Thornton is at 7.5M$ and Lecavalier will be at 7.7M$ starting next year.

Main difference is that you might lose Thornton in 2 years while you can keep Lecavalier until the 16/17 season after which he costs next to nothing if you want to buy him back.

I voted for Joe but I don't think he wins because of his contract, on the contrary since you can lose him pretty soon and even if you keep him, do you think he'll ask for a pay cut?

looking back over Vinny's career he really has only had a good plus minus rating the year TB won the Cup. It wasn't one of his higher points years with 66. Career wise he is a minus 89. Thornton is a plus 114

That contract Vinny has is outrageous whereas the Thornton contract leaves some financial room for the GM

I'm thinking Joe would be a better choice

Lecavalier was pivotal to his team's Stanley cup run. We all know and seen first hand how useful Thornton is in the playoffs.

They're both great players, I choose Lecavalier because of his better playoff performances.
