Is this? I think that they have always tried to get the best team available for tournaments, but in Mestis -games there are lots of players tested and some of them also will get their shot in tournaments if they perform well enough.

What are the chances of Simila making the team as backup?

It's fairly hard to predict the goalies that will make the final roster this year, but Ortio is probably the safest bet of them all. Similä has a decent chance of making the team, but so does a few other goalies as well and some surprising alternatives might also surface once the season starts.

As a goalie Similä needs to improve in pretty much all the areas of the game, so moving to Niagara IceDogs has its risks. There won't be that much time for training with all the games and traveling.

Ok thanks. So Ortio has a good shot at being the starter?

It's even harder to predict the starter and the backup, because the situation is still pretty much open. Mainly, because there are no top class goalie prospects available that would be clearly above the others.

Erik Haula - Joonas Nättinen - Sami Blomqvist
Ilmari Pitkänen - Matias Myttynen - Iiro Pakarinen
Jani Lajunen

Jyri Niemi - Sami Vatanen
Kristian Näkyvä - Tommi Kivistö
Veli-Matti Vittasmäki - Mikko Niemelä
Nico Manelius

Joni Ortio
Petteri Similä
Nice lines, and we will have so much better team compared to last year.

My lines:
Rajala-Granlund-Pulkkinen - Of course
Hartikainen-Nättinen-x - Tons of players for the RW spot. We need skilled forward to this, I really hope that Elo steps up and conquers the spot. Other possibilites? Donskoi, Haula, Rask, Blomqvist maybe.
x-Rask-x
x-Myttynen-x
To the 3rd and 4th line we have centers Rask and Myttynen pretty much locked IMO. How about the wingers? Impossible to say, because there arent any stand-outs atm. But Finland tends to have the grinder department in shape, so we just have to wait and see who steps up in this fall/winter. So, we have clearly two scoring lines and two more defensive/physical/grinder lines.

Vatanen-Niemi - Maybe they put them in different lines, but in PowerPlay this duo should be magic.
x-x
x-x

The same as in the forward lines, we dont have any clear choices at the moment, but here are the possible players:
Jokerit trio - Kivistö, Manelius, Eronen. All three are big question marks atm, but I believe, that 2/3 of them will play in WJC.
TPS duo - Aaltonen and Viittasmäki. Aaltonen was good in U18, Viittasmäki has never impressed me.
The rest:
Näkyvä - Should be in the team imo.
Niemelä - I´ve never seen him play, so impossible to say.
Vidgren - Same as Niemelä.
Turkulainen - A big NO atm.
So the defense raises some questions for sure. I´d choose from this group Kivistö, Eronen, Näkyvä, Aaltonen and Viittasmäki in addition to Vatanen and Niemi.

Ortio should be #1 goalie, Similä #2? Maybe, we will see. Kuusela may challenge Similä for the #2 spot.

So overall we have much better offense than last year, Defense is also a bit better, goalies are on-par with last year imo. So good year for us and hopefully we can challenge the big four USA, Russia, Canada and Sweden this year.

Rissanen, Dufva, Tokoi, and Sointu

Since they aren't in your group of players mentioned but were drafted by CHL teams (and I believe the first three are definitely going to Canada - not sure about Sointu), does that help or hurt their chances of being selected?

Rissanen will be in WJC, next year. He is like Janne Niinimaa but with less offensive upside, very risky in own zone and takes way too many penalties, pretty much like Kivistö.

Sointu was injured last year so that has an effect on this years selections. But he has definately chance to be in the team. He has bulked up in the summer so that is a big + for him, altough he is still small, poor-mans Rajala imo. So not much of a factor in checking lines, which may drop him from the team.

Dufva and Tokoi, dont know about these guys.

I think that playing in CHL doesnt hurt anybodys chances concerning being selected in WJC. We will see.

What was his injury last year? And is he still heading to Ottawa or has he decided to stay with Ilves? I haven't seen him on the men's teams lines for any of their friendly matches. Does that mean another year of juniors?

If nothing changes come sunday, U20 team will probably roll over Roki. Just came from Roki - D-team game, this team's a mess.

Well my (high) expectations for this tournament took a hit today because Teemu Pulkkinen's wrist injury requires surgery so he'll be out for about 3 months.

Jortikka before the TuTo match:
- 2-4 players from NA, he mentioned: Niemi, Rajala, Sointu, Similä and Rissanen. He didn't mention Haula.
- All 6 candidates from Jokerit are injured. (Eronen, Kivistö, Manelius, Pulkkinen, Pitkänen and Helenius.)

Bad news from the game:
- Granlund went to the locker room midway to the second period, either a charley's horse or a cramp on his thigh. There were two kinds of information.
- Jormakka went to the locker room midway to the third period, possibly an arm injury.
- Rask was also injured.

Donskoi is hot now. 1st line with Granlund and Hartikainen - 2 goals in the game, 1 in regulation, 1 in PS, a nice PS by the way. Do they stream any of the games from the u20-tournament in russia nest weekend?

Granlund not playing the rest of the game was only precautionary. He should be able to play by friday according to the head coach.

Rask on the other hand has a broken bone in his hand and his WJC participation could be in danger.

Jortikka before the TuTo match:
- 2-4 players from NA, he mentioned: Niemi, Rajala, Sointu, Similä and Rissanen. He didn't mention Haula.
That's too bad because Haula is currently in a hot streak. 4+2 in his last game with the total of 14 points in 9 games.

Who knows if Jortikka just forgot to mention Haula, but the fact that Haula didn't receive that much ice-time in that U20 tournament in early August, might indicate that Jortikka doesn’t value him that highly. Just pure speculation.

Would be a real shame if Haula isn't on the team. He has a really good season with 20 points in 14 games. That's the 3rd position in overall scoring of the whole USHL.
