Steve Kelly

Hi there,

we (Eagles Mannheim, Germany) just seemed to have aquired Steve Kelly for the coming season. I was wondering if anyone here could give me the good, the bad and the ugly on this guy?

Thx,

Bejay

He hasn't seen much action in the NHL, but he's one of the most skilled AHLers and I would assume that he'd be more than adequate depending on what level that league is.

Good package overall. He's good on his skates, has good offensive awareness, is physical ( takes a lot of dumb penalties though ), and has a good shot...he just hasn't been able to put it all together on the higher levels.

Just curious, is this just in case the negotiations for the CBA fall through, or is he definitely going to Germany regardless? I know Goaltender Cristobal Huet has signed on with a European league incase there isn't an NHL season next year.

From what i saw of the Steve Kelly, is he played fairly well when placed on the first line, but seemed to get confused or lacked desire when playing on the 2nd or 3rd lines comparitively. Definately has offensive ability, his Defensive play isn't as sharp as his offensive game is but he is very capable of scoring.

Overall, one would expect more from a 6th overall draft choice.

For what it's worth, when we ( Manchester ) experienced a shortage of defensemen last season, Coach Boudreau dressed Kelly as a defenseman and he looked fine. He's not a defensive specialist, but he's not a liability.

We'll miss him if this is true. Never fully understood what keeps him down in the AHL. Attitude?

from what i've heard about him from team sources, i got that impression that attitude may have been part of it, but that he was just never able to put it all together against more-skilled defensemen.

Er soll in der deutschen Liga sehr gut tun. Bitte schoen, sagen Sie uns wie er spielt. Viel glueck naechstes Jahr.

Thanks everyone for the informations. I'll keep you updated on his progress in the DEL. According to (unconfirmed) sources, he won't come alone either. A (usually well connected) hockey magazin in germany reported today that beside Kelly, John Tripp will play in Mannheim as well. Any comments on him?

And thanks for the good wishes in rather good german

That's good news. Now I've the chance to watch Steve Kelly and John Tripp alive and well. Now lets hope Frolov is coming to Germany as well in case the negotiations for the CBA fall through and I'm even more happy. About Tripp..he's not fast and his overall skills are average, at least on NHL level. He's a physical player who is capable to make room for other players and he's willing to crash the net. So now and then he will score a goal.

Ich bin sehr froh.

Good wheels, no finish.

This guy will play for another dozen teams before he's done.
