Will Chelios be back next season?

He's 47 years old had O pts in 28 games after coming back from injury and was a +1, he's a UFA July 1st and has seen his role on the team shrink to that of a seventh d-man. Even at his current salary of 750K is it worth it for Detroit to bring him back when they have many young prospects that need more ice-time to develop further...

I dont have the link but he stated he wants to play and is willing to play elsewhere if he doesn't fit in Detroits plans. Money is not the issue. I know many Hawk fans would disagree with me but I'd love to see him as the 7th man in Chicago. Could really teach our young D and be a nice veteran leader in the room.

The Wings have already made it clear they won't bring Chelios back as a player.

Really? Didn't think it was that set in stone. I still think he could fit somewhere, on a team that is lacking bottom pairing defensmen and has a young d-corps. Would Atlanta sign him to the league minimum? Maybe L.A? His experience is valuable, plus with his amazing fitness he could help push those less "driven" players.

I think its almost a stone cold lock that he will not be in Detroit next year. Jonathan Ericsson's emergence pretty much was the last nail in Cheli's Detroit coffin.

He mentioned earlier this year that he would like to go back and finish his career in Chicago, but I dont know where he would fit in on that good, young team either.

Chelios looked awful in the games he has played in these playoffs. I love the guy, and his career has been outstanding, but I dont think he can perform at the NHL level anymore. I would like for the Wings to win the cup again this year and have my lasting memory of Chelios be of him taking the cup around the ice one last time.

Go run triathalons Cheli! Find another outlet for your competitive spirit.

No way should he be back in Detroit. His presence this season is one reason why Ericsson featured so rarely. But he could still do a job on a team with young defencemen, especially since his salary is peanuts.

I don't remember when, i think it was during game 3 after Teemu Selanne went around him because of his speed and Chelios was too old/too slow. Well anyways, during the replay they said that he was already thinking of coming back next year to keep playing, lol. Detroit or not, I dunno, dont care, he should'nt be playing anymore lol.

I hope Toronto signs him so Milan Lucic can end his career (one way or another)

Cheli may want to play another season, but he should just hang it up. I was disappointed that Babcock benched him for that last three games of last year's SC Finals thinking that was his swan song. He was a great hard hitting HoF Dman, but he is a shell of the player he was. To counter-quote Dylan Thomas, Do go gently into that soft night.

Cheli randomly being named an alternate captain for the last game of the season against Chicago was kind of the "We want you to retire" moment I first noticed.

After Detroit won the cup last year I was really hoping he was going to call it quits then, especially when he was a healthy scratch for the finals. Maybe I'm wrong but he seems to think hanging around as long as possible is some badge of honour even when he is no longer an effective contributer. I hope he changes his mind and retires after this year rather than for him only to realize its time when the phone stops ringing and he has no choice.

Used to hate him when he was a Hawk. Gotta say since he has been here, he has been one of my favorites. But, its time to move on, for us, and him. I understand the desire to keep playing, but really Cheli, do yourself a favor, and hang em up.

According to reports, it has already been paid, and was an accounting error. I seriously doubt Cheli had an issue paying 80k. He owns two restaurants in Detroit, and made 800k this year. Guy has some serious cash.

Thank god. He's not a bad player, it's just he's sort of a liability on ice to make a stupid mistake or get burned by a quick skater.

Isnt all that what makes a bad player?

He is not a good player anymore and he should realize that.

We already have an old man in O'Donnell but hey why not. I'd take an 50 year old Chelios over a 30 year old Gauthier any day.

I think Cheli would love LA as he owns a home in Malibu.

Chelios? didnt he used to play in the 80's? he is still playing?

he needs to retire. he gets burned too many times for anyone to pick him up. its too fast of a game for him anymore. if someone wants him to be a tutor for young defensman, then let him be an asst. coach.

ITS TIME CHELI, and quit making that horrendous chili while your at it

I would honestly be okay with Nashville signing him. We need a vet to eat up some minutes while we introduce our prospects to the league, and who's better for that than a 3-time Norris winner closing in on 1000 career points?

Of course, I don't expect him to even consider signing here... but I think he might be tempted by not having to put up with the "Chelios is a sissy" chants anymore.

Realistically, I expect him to sign in the East. Less travel might actually let him play until he's 50.
