I give you credit for at least offering something Boston might be interested in, unlike some of the offers for Patrice on here as of late... but every trade proposal for Patrice includes some form of what you wrote. If he's such a huge risk, and Boston is not going to get full value for him, they are better off just hanging on to him.

Value-wise it's not bad. I like Hamhuis. I think Nashville might have to add a pick, but it's pretty close.
Just a hunch, and I realize it sounds like minutia, but I think the Bruin's would prefer a Right handed shot defenseman if they move a forward for defenseman. They already have Chara, Ferrence, Stuart, and Hunwick as left handed shots, so adding another would give you a surplus of lefties and a dearth of talent as righties (Wideman and Ward).

I would do this in a heartbeat. I dont think either side would add anything, Bergeron may be the better player but is injury prone lately and that would lower the value plus costs a bit more. Great proposal though.

Nashville needs offensive catalysts, any way they can get them.
I wouldn't say Nashville is all set at center with Arnott/Legwand. Maybe if your content with mediocrity.
Arnott is an average (at best) first line center. He's also old and could start declining anytime now. Legwand is an average second line center.
Even if it means trading Legwand for another need, I'd take Bergeron over him. Reason is greater offensive abilities. Also, 23 yrs old vs 29. Or keep Legwand as a 3rd line center, or move him to wing.

How so? Maybe they won't literally "walk" but once a team signs them to an offersheet for ~5M ea, how can you possibly keep them?
Chiarelli would match anything in $5M/per range without thinking. Even if he's already tight against the cap, he'll match, then work on moving pieces later. It's obviously not the ideal route to take, but it's much a better scenario than losing a 21/22 year old core player for few picks.

You can keep them because no GM is going to sign either player for $5M a year.
It seems like we are going to go through this every season during the course of this CBA (the legacy of Kevin Lowe, I suppose). Teams aren't going to put an exorbitant amount of money into a player that's had one great season in a salary cap world. There is simply too much risk attached to sacrifice so many assets (cash at length and four first round picks) for one player unless it's a truly elite talent, a classification that Krejci and Kessel don't quite fall under with their one excellent season apiece. You're not only gambling the future of your team, but likely your job that this one player can come in and be the answer to whatever problems you've been having.
I suspect we see each sign for reasonable money (likely with Kessel getting the better paycheck) at a moderate term, so they'll become RFAs again in a few years, and then Boston can lock them up to the big, juicy contracts that everyone expects to see them get this year. There is also the matter of Matt Hunwick, who will likely get a good $2.5M or so. This will likely mean the end of Marco Sturm's tour of duty with the Bruins, as clearing out his contract will allow the team some extra cushion against the cap and give them the means to sign a decent backup goaltender along with Sturm's replacement.
I will concede that there is still a possibility that they trade Bergeron, but I think with his offensive potential, that would be a mistake. They could more easily recover from the loss of Sturm since he played something like eight games this year. They were a contender without him and they'll likely continue to be.

The B's have to trade Bergeron to save money when his value is at its absolute lowest because some GM is going to give Phil Kessel (torn rotator cuff and labrum, questionable for the start of the season) and David Krejci (hip surgery, questionable for the start of the season) $5 million a piece, while surrendering at least a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounder during the worst global economic downturn in 80 years in a league whose cap is determined by revenue.

As far as the deal goes, I like it. Hamhuis is a good player, but I don't think Bergeron is going anywhere as the return for him is probably not good enough to justify the move given how much more they could get next offseason if he continues to improve.
