Seriously people, this is where the negotiation begins. You always ask for a lot, and Burke will probably start with just Kaberle for the 7th. then you work towards a middle ground.
When you have an asset that another organization covets. You ask for everything. What else should Tampa say? They're trying to get as much as possible.
this is why we are how we are. You guys complain about overpayment. Its the 2ndoverall pick.
Hedman is going 1st. Leaving us tavares 2nd. Would you trade Schenn/7th and Kab for Crosby or Ovechkin? YES. Why? because they are amazing forwards who can change a team.
Stamkos had a bad year but tore it up in the worlds.
Tavares is gonna do the same. Defensemen can be replaced folks. Everyone is praising Schenn like there isn't a ton of stay home defensemen available in every draft.
Tavares broke OHL records. 2 Months ago every leaf fan was getting wet over getting him somehow. Now when a deal (essentially Schenn/7th since Kab is getting older and not his oldself anymore unfortunately) is offered for tavares, we groan and moan.
He's just saying what he wants to get for the pick. Aim high and go from there. The good thing that comes from these statements is that he's saying the pick is being made available for the right price. As Burke has stated in many press conferences this kind of trade takes a long time to put together and often doesn't happen until the draft. They are simply gonna go back and forth until the draft.
Do you really think you could get Ovechkin or Crosby for that package?
I think the point was that they were consensus #1s and both were much more highly regarded than this year's top people. Taveres has zero chance of being a Crosby.
When you put it in the context of Hedman vs Schenn, Cowan and whatever pick Kaberle brings (Kassian, Ferraro, Ellis, Glennie etc) it doesn't look like a smart move for a rebuilding club, and I am a Hedman fan. If Hedman is the next great defenseman, then of course it is cheap but imagine looking back on this deal in a few years thinking they traded a Pronger, a Foote and threw in Kaberle for a speedier Kjell Samuelsson.

Agreed.
It's starting to look more and more like Tavares will eventually be a Leaf. We know this is the most we'll lose (if Burke gets excited today) - can Jbo / Komi signings not mitigate the loss? There's a bunch of question marks, but the positive of all this is that negotiations have begun and we're not as delusional as some seem to think about getting Tavares.

I don't think this leads to us drafting Tavares unless the Isles surprise everyone and draft Hedman. I don't even see us draftinh Hedman if we got the pick. All I know is that the draft should be fun to watch this year.
What an idiot... Burke will hang up the phone at Kaberle + Schenn
Kabby and schenn for 2nd done and done.
Schenn aint gonna be no tavares or duchene, theres a reason schenn went 5th in last years draft (woulda gone 6th as filatov woulda prolly gone 5th) while a player like tavares duchene woulda gone 1/2/3 in last years draft.
Oren Kouleas just told Sportsnet that the Leafs can have the 2nd overall pick for the 7th pick, Kaberle and Schenn!!!
I would do this in a HEARTBEAT!!!
Make it happen Burke!!!
So he can be had for less than that.
You don't open with your final offer.

He's a scout's dream in the way he prepares himself and plays an unselfish game, making smart decisions with the puck. With his bloodlines, he certainly understands what it will take to make it at the next level.
I imagine this would be the conversation between the 2 if a call was placed
Burke Calls TB GM:
TB GM: Hey Brain how is it going?
Burke: Not to bad, just signed Gustavsson to a 2 year deal so we are pretty excited about that. How is thw weather down there?
TB GM: Weather is nice, Congrats on gustavsson, What can I do you for Brian?
Burke: Well I was wondering what it would cost me to get the 2nd overall pick?
TB GM: Well Burkie, it is available. It will run you Schenn, Kabs and the 7th Overall
Burke: Click
TB GM: Brian? Brian are you there? O S**T Brian i was just kidding i gotta shake things up or here or i am gone. Brian I will give you Malone, just take him. You there? Not Enough? O god just take anyone Ill give you Vinny and Malone? We cant addord them anyways. Brian I hope you did not hang up............ I dont want to get fired !!!! BRIAN!!!
this is just posturing on the TB owners part. Although, I think the GM should be in this position and not the owner. This kinda meddling reminds me of Richard peddie.
If Tavares is still available and they also add Malone and another player, this would be about reducing cap, I would think, I can't see them adding more cap.
