The Need for Another Defenseman

AVERAGE TIME ON ICE
Braydon Coburn- 24:36- 19th in NHL
Kimmo Timonen- 24:30- 22nd in NHL

Braydon and Kimmo logged a ton of minutes this season. We relied on them for alot, and they responded pretty well. However, IMO, we need a 3rd defenseman who can log bigger minutes. I bleive that Ryan Parent can definitely play more, but I do not trust Carle, Jones or Alberts for much more time.

I am not sure if the need is for a guy such as JBo (who was number 2 in the league, with 26:59 per game) or someone else that could be aquired in a trade or mid tier FA

But IMO, we definitely need another defenseman to log more minutes

I have said for weeks (months?) now that the only changes I want to our D are: 1) Sbisa up full-time; 2) Jones gone, replaced by a veteran defenseman who is physical/rugged, but not a complete slug. If we have that, we have a good D. We could re-sign Alberts as a 6th/7th guy, too, depending on the cap.

Timonen
Parent
Carle
Coburn
Sbisa
UFA
Alberts/Phantom/UFA

Coburn has no business being out there that long every night at this point. They definitely need some help in the top-4 I think.

I think someone needs to break Jones' legs, if you know what I mean, and put him on LTIR.

I've said it in other threads: this team needs to find a nasty defenseman for the top four.

I agree with getting Alberts to be a 6th D, but we need that other big physical D that none of them really are except for Parent. Let's replace Hatcher's legs with Jones' and give Jones Hatcher's legs. That will put Jones out with knee and hip problems while Hatcher can skate again! Or we can try to sign one - heck, we might even have one or two in our system if we're willing to give them time. I don't think Stevens puts faith in anyone besides his top 4.

I think this deserves it's own thread. The off-season thread is all over the place with guys posting books on the cap, etc.

Anybody have a list of UFA defensemen? Somebody like Ohlund or Bieksa (not UFAs as far as I know) and the Flyers would be real contenders.

Personally, I like Alberts as the 6th D. He's big, physical, plays the PK well, and can skate. It's really everything you want out of your 6th D. I think he's too good/expensive for the 7th D-spot.

A couple UFA D-men I'd love to have (assuming a JayBo is unreasonable)...Mattias Ohlund and Francois Beauchemin. Two really, really solid defensive players.

Edit: One of them...not both.

Also...I want nothing to do with Komisarek. He is going to make a ton of money, and the only thing the guy does is hit. Ask some Montreal fans...he's regressed big time. We have far better options.

You guys have to dump Jones and Carle and let the younger d-men develop. And then maybe trade a forward for a good #2 defenseman?

Yeah, if he works on moving the puck a bit and not making such stupid turnovers he's really a good fit as a 6th BUT he's not paid like a 6th. With Sbisa and Parent playing for cheap we might get away with it but $1.5 (probably around what he'll get) is too much for a #6.

yeah that's the plan I'd like to see most. Sbisa and Parent likely on the roster, add a #2/3, and bring in a cheap solid vet to battle it out for the last spot with Bodrov, Marshall, etc.

Carle is "younger".

Just about the LAST thing this team need to do now is put a couple early 20s defensemen out for regular shifts.

What they need to do is either sign or trade for a legit Top 4 guy and move Parent down to play with Jones.

Although he is my favorite player, Kimmo shouldn't be on the ice as much either. He is very smart and sound position wise but he logs too much ice. He is a 1A defenceman but he is not a stud. If Kimmo had his ice cut I believe he would put up more points offensively as well.

If we sign a top 4 guy and still have to keep Jones, I'd be much more comfortable having Jones out there with Timonen and put the newly signed guy with Parent. At this point I trust Parent's defensive abilities a lot more than Jones right now.

I did not think there was anything wrong with opening this thread. I realize it is being talked about in teh offseasdon thread, but that thing is all over teh place. I beleive it is a good idea to have a thread where you can have a discussion about a certain topic, not a thread where you are talking about aquiring Elder, Luongo, JOBO, Vokoun, Schneider, and every other person in teh NHL
