So who plays 5-7 minutes a game in 2010? Neal, Benn, or Ott?

The only thing we don't agree on is Bouwmeester, but as I said before that would be an ideal (highly unlikely) scenario. I completely agree that doing nothing is better than signing most of the UFA players thrown around.

On the other hand, in 2010, I'd rather have:

Morrow-Ribeiro-Schroeder
Neal-Richards-Eriksson
Benn-Wandell-Sawada
TBD-Sutherby-TBD

Bouwmeester-Niskanen
Vishnevskiy-Daley
Fistric-Grossman
TBD

Gustavsson
TBD

THAN

Morrow-Ribeiro-Schroeder
Benn-Richards-Eriksson
Neal-Wandell-Brunnstrom
Ott-Sutherby-Sawada

Vishnevskiy-Robidas
Grossman-Niskanen
Fistric-Daley
TBD

Turco
Gustavsson

IMO, the 2010 payroll has a bigger impact on this offseason than 2009. Paying Bouwmeester a boatload of money so Dallas has a true top defender is more important than retaining Ott and Brunnstrom. In both scenarios, Dallas has great forward lines. However, the first defensive group is vastly superior to the 2nd.

To whoever said Dallas didn't need a top defender, what team has one a Cup recently without one?

Like I said, Bouwmeester is a pipe dream, but it's the ideal situation for Dallas. Realistically, they just need to stay the course and hope for the best unless a surprising defender becomes available via trade. I was just pointing out a feasible way Bouwmeester could be added to the team, and that I believe Bouwmeester would overcompensate any of the negative aspects of losing Ott or Brunnstrom.

Carolina did it, as far as I remember. They had an elite goalie instead, but still.

That's not a question you worry about now. Neal could slump, Benn could bust, Morrow could never be the same, Ott could be a mirage produced by Ribeiro. Ott will be one of the Stars' primary PK options as long as he's with the team. That's one way to get him minutes.

And Tampa won the Cup with Kubina and Sydor as their top 2, so...

Boyle and Kubina is better than anything we have IMO. I do agree we need a really good D-man, but I wouldn't wanna be the team paying Jay, "has never won anything" Bouwmeester.

Just a friendly reminder that the Stars' defense was the 4th best in the entire NHL last season in limiting shots against. With Sydor.

That's a really interesting stat. Do you know how they were points wise for D-men in the NHL?

I don't know that off the top of my head. I'll look around.

My guess is that overall they'd be below average due to a lack of production on the PP. At even strength though I'd bet they're above average.

That's really funny because a Colorado fan was saying the same thing about the Avs. That's surprising that 2 of the bottom teams in the league were at the top of that category.

Meh, they were 9th.

Speaking of Colorado... some Avs fan was trying to defend Liles in that insane trade proposal thread and cited that his PP PPG would lead the Stars. Well, Niskanen blows him out of the water at even strength.
Liles: 0.74 points per 60 minutes
Nisky: 1.17 pp60m

You still have to admit that's strange. I'm actually kind of shocked Dallas was 4th. Makes Turco's season seem a little worse.

Early on though, they were giving up tons of quality shots. I'm not taking all the blame off Turco, but there were just quite a few odd man situations.
