I find it pretty hard to believe that anybody would suggest Gilmour didn't lead the Leafs in 93 and 94 just because he didn't have a stupid C on his sweater, or that they may not have done as well if he did.
It's as silly an idea as suggesting that Mats was anything less then the heart and soul leader of some very good Leaf teams in the late 90's and early this decade, I agree.

Well, same principles apply to Mats. He wasn't surrounded with world beating talent during his captaincy, but people like to hang the failure on him.

why does it have to be a choice between the two?

He'll be in honored in 3-5 years. I never was really a fan and I don't think he was a very good captain, but he was here for a long time and produced well statistically.

I hope they do it soon. The quicker the better, the less I have to hear his name in the future the better.

Get it done now, acknowledge him for his service and let's move on.

Yes, I know. He holds pretty much all of the records for our team and WAS a great player. But I don't hold two-faced people I KNOW in high regard and he doesn't deserve any less.

Thanks for getting ridiculously paid for a half-assed job in Toronto (Look at stats when playing for home country).

You're a real class act !!!!

Matts Sundin is a 2 faced, self centred, traitor who's only intrest was in his own wealth and station. He'll probably be honored about 2 minutes after the team acountants can figure out the best way to make a buck out of it

He averaged about a PPG game, sounds good, until you look at his international stats during the same years (especially against Canada)

Our team played better with their 'so called' captain out of the line-up.

He only turned up the heat when our team was mathamatically out of the playoffs.

He could have actually helped our organization moving forward (last season) but he wanted to retire a leaf and "couldn't imagin playing for another team" - i could have respected that until he signed this year.

Mats is gone, and If someone wants to honour him let the Nucks do it, personally I hope he retires. This guy was all about the money, he even said his greatest accomplishment would be winning Gold with his country (even more important than a Stanley Cup)
I hope our next Captain has heart.
ok honestly im pretty sure a lot of people would want to win something for there country instead of a stanley cup

Forsberg, Lidstrom, Alfredsson, Zetterberg, Sedin x2, Naslund, Ohlund, etc.

OR

Hoglund, Renberg, McCabe, Bohonos, Mogilny, Thomas, Roberts, Berezin, Kaberle, etc.

Which group do you think you're going to put more points up playing with...

You sound like such an emotional teenager. You make it sound like Mats personally invented unrestricted free agency or something.

Um, the team tried to trade Sundin. He did not ask to leave.

People keep forgetting that.

Within 2 years of his retirement, his jersey will be in the rafters. Those that think otherwise seriously need to give their heads a shake.
While I agree it wasn't exactly a story book ending to his leaf career the career itself can't even be debated. And, you all have Fletcher and MLSE to thank for helping to write the ending. Seriously kids and Mess, grow up.

Guys like Gilmour and Clarke did far more in the community than Sundin.
I'll never forget the tears from Sundin, "I want to retire a Leaf" "I talked to Salming and he regretted not retiring as a Leaf" I don't want to be a rent a player" "I want to play with a team from October till it ends"
He then signs with the team that offers him the most $$$ (as I predicated) half way through the season.
With him it was always about him.
He thought winning with Sweden was better than winning a Stanley Cup.
Too bad Sundin wasn't like fellow Swede Foresberg, who helped the Philly turnaround.
Sorry, I lost all respect for the man who received over 70 million dollars from Leaf fans.
If it was all money, why didn't he sign the 2 year 20 million dollar deal that was offered to him over the summer?

He left 15 million on the table.

As for the "Why would you honour him?" question, well he led the team in scoring 12 out of the 13 seasons and holds the club record for points and goals. He is one of the greatest players in franchise history despite what a bunch a childish fans say on a message board.

If anyone thinks a #13 banner isn't going up to the rafters, they've gotta be pretty stupid.

His number will msot likely be up in the rafters but when people talk about Sundin in a couple decades, they won't be talking about what Sundin did for the Leafs but how he ended his career with another team and delayed our rebuild by 3-5 years.

Fact is, Sundin tried coming back to the Leafs, Burke said no. How is that a traitor?

Yep, delayed our re-build 3-5yrs. We are indeed a Chris Higgens away from being perennial contenders, lol.

Since when was Toronto trading Sundin for Chris Higgins? Make a more complete post next time.
