Yes, the 'Canes are in the ECF but I still feel they could use an upgrade at wing, preferably RW. Who could they get in return for Joe Corvo or Anton Babchuk? The idea of Corvo-for-Kobasew was suggested in another thread, but I'd like to get some ideas from other fanbases.

- Babchuk scored 16G and 35PTS in 72GP while averaging 18:04/game. Just turned 25 and is an RFA this summer.
- Corvo scored 14G and 38PTS in 81GP while averaging 24:19/game. Turns 32 this summer and has one more year left at a $2.75M cap hit.

We have a surplus of wingers clearly, but they are not the kind of defensemen that the Flyers are interested in. Sorry.

The sens would gladly give you Chris Kelly

Kelly and Picard for Babchuk and a 4th

Sorry if the value is completely off. I think very highly of Babchuk but I don't know how highly you guys tout him.

Value is very off... did they not say Top 6 winger? Kelly is more of a 3rd line defensive specialist.

Babchuk has quite a bit of value as well. The best way to describe him is he's somewhat of a mini-chara.

Babchuk to Tampa for Ryan Malone?

Just thinking aloud.

Lupul doesn't get you Babchuk.

He's too inconsistent and not on a good contract.

No money for either of those deals. I mean salary could be cleared I suppose but it wouldn't work with the Canes cap structure as is.

Lupul is interesting, but makes a fair bit more than Corvo or Babchuk (or what Babchuk is projected to make). Not a fan of Malone...reminds me too much of Cole.

Corvo played over 24 minutes per game during the regular season and even more in the playoffs, why would you trade such an important player for a top 6 winger?

You don't trade important players to fill holes elsewhere. In the worst case you could end up ruining your defensive lineup and offense from the blueline without getting much help up front.

As for trading Babchuk, if you can get something very valuable in return, why not. Though you first would have to make sure that Seidenberg is resigned, because losing two defensemen may be a bit too much. If Seidenberg doesn't want to resign, Babchuk shouldn't really be available.

The conditional pick is based on Babchuk either signing with Philadelphia or not.

i doubt CAR would like to take on that much salary. we'ed have to take a salary dumb back, but i dont know who they'd want to dump. Kaberle? Walin?

Lupul is a better player then Malone IMO. If Malone gets you Babchuck then so does Lupul

If that is the case then I'd take Wallin. He'd most likely be a 6th-7th defenseman on the team. Plus, with the salary cap rumored to be decreasing next season, getting rid of Lupul's contract for a young puck-moving defenseman and an expiring contract seems like a good way to save a couple million. Especially with the contracts of Coburn and Parent being up after next season.

higgins + 3rd for Babchuk?

Higgins is a 2nd line forward, VERY reliable in he zone & in PK, can score 20-25 goals a season and around 50pts.

Would defenitly fit in the Hurricanes system.

And babchuk would be a great partner for markov is komisarek leaves, if he doesnst, babchuk is a perfect 3/4 Defensman!

Um, what? Babchuk was a healthy scratch in Game 7 against Boston so that they could bring in Frantisek Kaberle. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that sitting out a healthy Chara was likely not contemplated on Boston's side.

Ironically, I watched both Corvo and Babchuk a handful of times in the regular season, but after watching both of them in the Devils and Bruins series I actually came away with the complete opposite reaction I was expecting. I was higher on Babchuk and down on Corvo, but I thought Corvo was the Canes best defenseman for much of both series, and I thought Babchuk was exposed on most nights. Trust me, I never thought I would come to that conclusion.

Babchuk had a terrific regular season, but he has indeed struggled in the playoffs. Even I agreed with the decision to scratch him for Kaberle in Game 7.

Factoring in the playoffs, Corvo is a better player at this point but I think that Babchuk has more value due to their relative ages and because Corvo has one more year until UFA.

As for the proposals in this thread:

Higgins+3rd for Babchuk:
would have to be a 2nd, not a 3rd (in 2010 if the Habs don't have one this year).
Corvo/Babchuk+Wallin for Lupul+Jones: Too much salary is coming back even with Wallin thrown into the deal.

Damn, I like Corvo a ton but Vancouver has nothing to offer except for Mason Raymond, who probably doesn't fit your bill if you're looking to win now.

How about if the sens do a sign and trade with Comrie?

Comrie signs a 2 year deal at 2.5 mill. We then trade Comrie and Columbus' 2nd for Babchuk.

Then Smith retires and Bell walks

Kuba, Lee, Volchenkov, Phillips, Campoli, Babchuk, Picard.
That is the sens D

Ruutu Staal Cole
Whitney Cullen Comrie
Jokinen Brind'Amour Samsonov
Walker Larose Eaves

That is one impressive core of forwards there too.

I think a Top 6 winger could be just as important to the Hurricanes as Corvo. He's not a real top-pairing defenseman, more of a #3/4 guy.

Also, i'm looking at the future: if the Hurricanes aren't going to be able to re-sign Corvo after next season, wouldn't it make sense to get a young winger for him now?

I agree that Seidenberg needs to be re-signed if one of Babchuk/Corvo is traded. In that case, the D would look like:

Pitkanen-Gleason
Seidenberg-Babchuk/Corvo
Wallin-Carson

No real interest in Comrie. If the 'Canes wanted him, they could just sign him when he hits UFA.
