Proposal: Gilbert+Cogliano for Gomez + Rights to Zherdev

(5.133 mil) for (7.357 mil)

The Oilers land a number 1 center(Gomez) and a top 3 player in Zherdev. The rangers lose some salary and gain a good young forward in Cogliano + a puckmoving defenseman.

I'd rather have Horc at 5.5 than Drury at 7 million and I'm probably Horcoff's biggest critic on HF. That says a helluva lot about Drury.

How does Edmonton have to add anything? Horcoff is as good (maybe slightly worse) then Drury but is 2 mill cheaper. Then we add in a good 3rd liner who will become a second liner.

Outside of the obvious (Horcoff/Drury are very comparable players, with Drury's cap hit being significantly higher; so why are the Oilers adding Cogliano to have that pleasure?)...

No. It's not bad value wise, but we can't afford to Gilbert $4 million a season for such a long time when we have Redden, and have Del Zotto and Sangs coming up. We know we're going to have to take back a bad contract for Gomez, but I'd rather take Penner to be honest. He's a forward and his contract isn't as long.

I do like Cogliano though.

With the rumour of Jagr coming to Edmonton I feel like the Oilers top line is set. Jagr will go LW to play with his pal Hemsky and the Oil then have:

Jagr Horcoff Hemsky
O'sullivan Gagner Kotalik
Penner Cogs Moreau
Pisani Nilsson Pouliot (Stortini)

Which IMO is three lines that could work well. Penner will be better with a new coach and a new system so could switch up and go on the second line.

Gomez has already been paid $18 million of the $51.5 million.He has $33.5 million remaining($6.7 million per average/$7.357 million cap hit) which is what the top free agent centers/forwards(i.e. Sedins)will receive this summer.

That's nice. I would take either Sedin over Gomez any day. And the cap hit is the most important part in todays NHL, and the Sedins will not have a 7.3 cap hit.

Well everyone but the most entertaining homers would take Sedins at 13M$ over a single gomez at 7+
