Last Meeting

Marc-Andre Fleury ran his home Game 1 record to a perfect 5-0 with a 3-2 win Monday night in Pittsburgh. The Pens jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals by a freshly sprung from the box Miroslav Satan and NHL scoring leader Evgeni Malkin. As the Canes have done all year, they came back to get the next goal and make things very interesting. The Penguins got some breathing room after Phillippe Boucher scored a powerplay goal in the 3rd period and closed out the game, despite giving up a late goal.

Former Penguin Great Video of the Day

Ron Francis has spent most of his career in the Whalers/Hurricanes organization both as a player and as a coach. As you all know, Ronnie Franchise also had very productive years with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 90's, winning two Stanley Cups and using potent offenses to climb his way towards the top of the NHL scoring leader list. Above are some videos chronicling Ron Francis' career and some of his most memorable moments.

Yes... Tom Barrasso is a coach for the Canes now, too. But honestly, who cares?

SCUDeriMISSILE's Pik2Clik

Tyler Kennedy has been an integral part of one of the league's best 3rd lines with his puck possession ability and willingness to shoot from anywhere. After looking very mediocre in the Capitals series, TFK finally showed some of his offensive ability in generating scoring chances in front of and around the Carolina goal in Game 1. Look for Kennedy to get back to cycling the puck effectively and finally take advantage of long bouts of puck possession.

The right time for a Fleury shutout?
Pens 71 - 0 Canes?

Ah well, I'm confident that we'll be looking at a 2-0 series lead in any case, but it'll be a battle. If Kunitz scores a pair I will have a smirk on that's too big for my face.

Nice GDT .

We didnt play our best game in game 1, hopefully its a 60 minutes effort this time. Canes are great at rebounding in game 2s, Pens know that by now. Im predicting Crosby is gonna have a big game.

Go Pens!

I agree. I expect a big day from Crosby and that 1st line. I just can't see him playing 2 games in a row not at his top level in this situation.

Another great GDT, Scuds!

Officially, the status of forwards Erik Cole and Tuomo Ruutu for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals is "day to day" and a "game-time decision."

That's what Canes coach Paul Maurice said today after the team practice at Mellon Arena.

But the word from the Hurricanes camp is that Ruutu will not play against the Penguins on Thursday night and there's a chance Cole could.
From newsobserver.com, Chip Alexander blog
I put this in another thread, but I think it fits here too.
Based on it, my guess would be:

--------------
13 Ray Whitney, 12 Eric Staal, 24 Scott Walker
26 Erik Cole, 8 Matt Cullen, 59 Chad LaRose
14 Sergei Samsonov, 36 Jussi Jokinen, 44 Patrick Eaves
18 Ryan Bayda, 17 Rod Brind'Amour, 39 Patrick Dwyer

4 Dennis Seidenberg, 25 Joni Pitkanen
6 Tim Gleason, 77 - Joe Corvo
5 Frantisek Kaberle, 7 Niclas Wallin

30 Cam Ward, 49 Michael Leighton
--------------

Maurice has some options at center with Dwight Helminen, Brandon Sutter and Mike Ryan to L4 in case of Brin'Amour playing on L3.
At RW, he could move Eaves to L3 and put Pat Dwyer on L4, keeping Brind'Amour on L4.

If he decides for a center, most probable is Helminen.
Sutter doesn't play since mid Feb., Dwyer since early Jan. and Ryan since mid March.

Anton Babchuk could reappear in place of Kaberle, but it's not much probable, I think.

Of course, Cole and Ruutu are still day-to-day and gametime decisions tomorrow and both could be out or in.

Great GDT Scuds. I enjoyed the TK love on the pik2clik segment. Hopefully it brings him some luck for Game 2. Also.. anything Ron Francis is straight win.

Yeah?

Cole, I'm sorry to say this but if this pattern continues, I'm going to have to warn you to shape up something bad ass in game four. Otherwise we have to scratch you and double shift Scuds in the finals. Never an easy decision, you know, but there's no I in TEAM.

Other than taking a shot at Barrasso, nice GDT.

I'm really hoping that there is no let down this game from the team and Sid. The Canes play very well in Carolina so the Pens need to win both games at home. Last game was a great pace and a nice up tempo game for the Pens but they need to be a little more sound around MAF.

Does anyone else hate that there was 2 day off between games?

Hate doesn't even begin to describe it...i could live with it once a series, but instead we still have 2 more of these layoffs to go...

you'd think they could have shortened these conference final series up a little bit no? At this rate the SCF gm 7 wouldn't be until the end of June!

Great GDT Scuds!...

Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy game;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy Cane's will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily Goals,
and forgive us our missed power plays,
as we forgive those who score against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from Evil match up with a Win. Amen!

From the guy who brought you Caputi's first NHL goal five minutes before it actually happened and who predicted a 6-2 route of the Caps in Game 7 ....

Kunitz scores tonight.

One small correction. Erik Cole plays RW and Chad LaRose plays LW when teamed with Matt Cullen on the second line. LaRose has gone back and forth between the two positions throughout the playoffs. Also, I think Tim Conboy would be the first choice to replace Ruutu, but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a Zach Boychuk appearance tonight. He is versatile and speedy, not unlike Detroit's Darren Helm. I think he could be pressed into action.

Oh, that's right.

It all depends on Maurice's willingness to try something a little 'off-pattern' for this game, I think.
Conboy, when he's used as a FW, if I'm not wrong, he's placed more at LW on lines with Brind'Amour/Cullen - Eaves/LaRose, but could play RW or someone be moved.
If he tries something more 'conservative' in a way, probably he'll go to a natural forward.

Boychuk I don't think, really. Not impossible, but he didn't play all year long since October, so...

Having lost game 1, I think there's a good chance we see some line scrambling as well, like switching Cole and Walker between the top 2 lines, for example. Paul Maurice seems to have used a wide variety of combos throughout these playoffs.

I don't. Yes, it sucks a little that we have to wait a little longer to see the next game, but at this point in the playoffs, every extra day of rest the players can get between games to recover is huge.

It's bad, I know.

I think Big Mclargehuge said he was on a 7 game win streak too. I'm the only one 0-3 lol. I'll be in the minors soon doing 5 up/5 downs & GDT's for the ****ing Johnstown Chiefs.
