19657408]Would it be safe to say Colin Wilson was the unofficial winner of the 2008 Combine?
I hear Matt Duchene is in pretty good shape and should do well at this combine.[/QUOTE
Colin Wilson was the talk of the combine last year. Not because he won the bench press, but more because of his physique. References to him being a physical specimen, beast, incredibly strong etc. Bogosian, as far as I know was close to him in hype after the NHL Combine

I thought I remembered reading last year that most GMs/scouts are more worried about how the kids react to the adversity of the physical beating they take during the tests, rather than the actual results. They want to see who's going to quit and who's going to push through them.

Every time there is a thread on this, someone posts head to heads of Hodgson and Wilson's stats at the combine and Hodgson beat him at a few of the upper body strength tests, which shocked me, hopefully someone can find these stats.

I'm 19 and i can do 150 lbs 19 times and I weigh 160.

I just don't think that is very impressive considering these players are semi pro already.

I would like to see the addition of the following skill/strength/intelligence tests in an effort to push the sport further along, faster:

Timed horizontal forehand-backhand deke
Timed vertical forehand-backhand deke
Shot Power
Pass Accuracy
Forehand stick strength(weighted)
Backhand stick strength(weighted)
Leg press
Hockey theory and situations test
Reactions test(similar to, but more advanced than the basic eye test given at the DMV)
I think all of these in addition to the ones they do now would be overkill.

They've got 100 kids. They've got four days for some of them but only two days for any NCAA prospects under the 48 hour rule if I'm not mistaken. The NCAA kids have to cram fitness testing and potentially 30 interviews (although I heard a couple teams don't interview at the combine - Dallas IIRC?) in only 48 hours. From what I hear, it's a pretty jam packed schedule for these guys as it is.

You don't need all these tests to see how the players do on the ice - they've been WATCHING them on the ice all year.

The bench press etc. are also timed with a metronome. If you don't do them within a certain amount of time and with the rhythm, they aren't counted. Most of the numbers that people quote as being able to do in the annual thread on this would be a lot lower if done in the same fashion as these kids do.

The bench press is really an acquired strength. If you don't practice it, for the most part, you can do very poorly. If you practice, you can improve exponentially in a matter of a few weeks.

When they first started the testing of this sort, most of the prospects didn't practice up for it. As a result, many did very poorly, although most scouts ignored it. For instance, Dany Heatley couldn't do 1 bench press of 150 lbs in his draft year (and he likely had the hardest shot and best sets of hands in his draft). I don't think it's held him back. Now, prospects at least start to prepare for a few months before hand (for the tests themselves).

If anything, it simply tests a prospects willingness to work out and prepare. I don't think the bench press is of much of a gauge for professional hockey players. And I haven't seen any correlation between the best at that test and how they have done as a pro.

Is it true that Dany Heatley did exactly zero lifts during his combine?

Has anyone heard if Cowen was taking part? I saw that he was on the list of invites, but when his injury first hit it was reported that he would most likely miss the combine. Any updates on him?

It is according to TSN's list of events. But I've seen nothing reported yet.

Kassian I think will do well on the Bench, as will Tavares.

All around I say is Duchene, who will probably be in the top 5 in every test.

But I think the bench press is really overrated for the NHL, these kids are just 18 so it's not really expected that everyone will do as well as Colin Wilson did last yr. These kids will be put on a strength program once they're drafted. When the majority of them turn pro at 20 they will likely be benching their body weight.

I just feel that the combine should add a lower body strength test such as a squat or leg press.

I'm finding it a bit odd that I haven't seen a single article or blog on this year's combine yet.

I think Cowen and Budish will dominate in the combines. Partly because they're monsters to begin with.... partly because they've been rehabbing, so this should all be familiar to them.

Looks like he's still only interviewing.

When do interviews and some responses usually start to come out, or do they usually wait til the end of the week to release everything with the workout results?
