Top NHL Rookies in 2009/10?

Who will make a push for the Rookie of the Year award in 2010?

A few names that I think have a realistic shot to end up in the top 10 or so...

John Tavares
Victor Hedman
Tyler Bozak
Cody Hodgson
Nikita Filatov
Derick Brassard
Claude Giroux
James vanRiemsdyk

I think Brassard and Giroux played too many games and don't qualify for the Calder trophy next year if they aren't they definately be up there.

I think highest chance would go to Filatov who has shown he does have the ability to score goals. Next I would say would be John Tavares as he has been ready to play in the NHL for 2 seasons now. Victor Hedman has been playing against men for 2 seasons now and should transfer over to NHL fairly easy. Bozak, JVR and Hodgson I don't see up in the top 3 as they are going to get shelter minutes do to there teams strengths.

So imo:

Filatov then (Giroux/Brassard would be up here as well) Tavares then Hedman then Bozak/JVR/Hodgson, and my Dark horse (homer) pick is Michael Grabner.

Isn't Brassard ineligible?

Matt Gilroy and Artem Anisimov might have a chance.

Max Pacioretty will be on the Habs' roster this season barring a disastrous training camp. Might get 50-60 points. Possibly more, probably not enough for the Calder though.

What about Angelo Esposito in Atlanta?

He has played too many games to be eligible.

It's pretty hard to predict a dman to win the Calder, considering Doughty's year and the fact he wasn't even nominated.

Filatov could really add a lot to Columbus. I expect Brassard, Voracek, Nash and him to play big roles in their top 6, perhaps as early as next season.

Duchene has a chance too. Wherever he gets drafted he'll have a shot at the team in the fall...if he makes one of the clubs then he could make a run at the calder.

Duchene has the tools to be a dominant NHL player. He's quick and shifty and that scores goals and wins games in the modern NHL.

I don't think PK Subban, Zach Boychuk, Kevin Shattenkirk or Thomas Hickey have a chance to finish in the top 10. All good players, but not likely to be mentioned for R.O.Y. next year.

I think Pietrangelo is a long shot, Eller too.

Anisimov, Wilson, Grachev, and Backlund are good. I would include Jiri Tlusty, if eligible.

If Giroux was still eligible, I'd bet a lot of money he would win it. With JVR, it all depends on how he plays in training camp. The spot at 3rd line LW is there for him to take it, but he has to improve his play from what I've seen. I think in all likelihood he starts the season with the Phantoms.

Duchene or JT

Darkhorses: Anisimov he dominated the AHL at just 20, Varlamov no need to say anything really his playoff performance did the talking, Grachev that is if he makes the team next season which I hope he does, and Filatov I don't see him being the favorite to win so I put him the darkhorse area.

Anisimov definitely has a chance. Unfortunately the other players on the ice might prevent him from him putting up as ideal numbers as he can. Grachev also has an outside chance, but he would have to make the team to begin with, which is far from definite.

Thanks some pretty lofty expectations, seeing as he barely put up that kind of PPG in the AHL...
