Habs Sign Mikael Johansson (Update: Rumour of him Returning to Sweden)

In Swedish media today... This is just some examples, there are more articles also.

FBK-star on his way to Montreal

"I am leaning towards taking the chance"
FÄRJESTADE Mikael Johansson is on the way to the NHL.

The forward has received a contract proposal from the classic Montreal Canadiens.

- It tends that I'll take the chance, "he told Sportbladet.

http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportblade...icle5211214.ab

"23-year-old Mikael Johansson is very close to break his contract, despite two years remaining on the contract, and sign for the NHL - Montreal Canadiens club.
A one-year contract - which data is worth more than eight million kronor"

http://www.elitsportsbloggen.se/?p=4109

Färjestad may well lose Mikael Johansson to NHL. Montreal Canadiens star forward has offered a one year contract. "I received a contract from Montreal, but nothing is official yet," says Johansson to Expressen. (eurosport.se)

It should be "nothing is official yet".

The Red Wings have had plenty of busts with their swedish guys too. That said, I like Johansson. He's kinda like a swedish Kyle Wellwood.

Johansson has signed with Canadiens. A swedish sportsblog of the news paper Värmlands Folkblad (who is based in Karlstad, the home town of Färjestad, Johansson's Swedish club) has written on his blog that Johansson has signed the contract with Canadiens. The source is reliable.

8,000,000 Kronor = aprrox. 1.075m USD. Thats a pretty decent contract. Someone said it was 2-way though? So, 75k for the AHL part right?

From his stats he looks to be a 3rd line center. 5'10" 180 lbs though. Can never tell with Swedes though. They all seem to blossom late. Good pick up for depth and bring some competition to the center position.

Ok, from those you tube videos he has tons of speed and good hands. Highlight reel goals and shootout goals.

How does he compare to Janne Lahti?

I don't know about this.

We are a team with no direction right now. Maybe we should figure out who owns this team before we start signing unknown's to million dollar contracts.

Can't wait until people on the board pencil this guy in the starting line up just like Lahti.

Start the rumor that a Swede and a Finn can't co-exist and that this signing has to mean the end of the Koivu era.....who starts first?

As far as seeing him in the starting lineup....well the difference this year is that compared to when Lahti was here, seems that there will be some room. But strangely while I totally expect Koivu to be signed, if there is one position that there is no room, it's at the centerman position. Here's your center line for you: Koivu-Plekanec-Lapierre-Metropolit. Like it or not.

Seems like a depth move or a shot in the dark, which I am fine with.

But when we have so many players to re-sign why does he get 1 million +??

Some info from http://www.eliteprospects.com/player...r=2647&lang=en

"Johansson has seen a great development as of late. A skilled player that can be used both on the wing as well as play center. He is a good skater with impressive hockey sense and fine technical skills. Controls the puck with ease and stickhandles smoothly through traffic. Not very big, but plays with some grit and handles larger opponents well. Could improve some aspects in his defensive game."

Seems like Grabovsky to me...

With his skates on, perhaps.

As for scouting report, as I wrote in the earlier post, a swedish Kyle Wellwood.

I don't mind taking chances on skilled players that are late bloomers in Sweden. Worst comes to worst, he doesn't pan out and goes back to europe, it costs us nothing.

Red Wings Swedish Prospects update: Part 2 (2006)

Mikael Johansson, C, Färjestad (SEL)

Johansson is another one of the Red Wings picks that were selected among the very last players in the past few years. He was the fourth to last pick in the 2003 NHL draft.

He has come a long way since than and has fought his way to the top Swedish league, now playing with Färjestad.

Johansson is still a smallish player with good skating, puck skills and a well-developed hockey sense. But he still lacks the physical attributes needed to play in the pros.

His offensive skills are worth noting, but unfortunately the rest of his game will hold him back at the next level. He just doesn’t have the body/skill combination to make it to the NHL. If he was a bit bigger, he would have probably been on the radar for another season or two.

But with the situation as it is now, Johansson is not a legitimate NHL prospect.

Did North America run out of midgets? We have started shipping them from Europe now?
