But when we have so many players to re-sign why does he get 1 million +??
1 million is nothing out of a 56 million cap. And if he is good enough to stick on the roster to make 1 million, beating out Metropolit, Chipchura, Maxwell, and who knows who else, then it will very likely be 2% of the cap well spent. The same can be said if he sticks as a winger, or a PP specialist center who plays wing 5 on 5.

I see this as a no risk move. Nothing to get too excited about, but good teams find ways to add depth through overagency (ie, overaged UFA prospects) because you only need only one good player to make all the Lahtis worth it.

Yes, yes you are.

Let's make people happy and go sign some 6'6 slow as **** centre. I'm all for a big centre too, but at least he's trying. Did you ever stop to think he's signing him to trade someone else ?

Did you just call Gilmour one of the softest players to play the game?

The habs have a scouting departement that is filing the needs for both the Dogs and the Habs, they have been following players for a long time now. They thought this undersize guy could have a shot and uscced either in the NHL or the AHL.

They looked at it, knowing that he wasn't filling any of their needs, but that he had the potantial to become useful someday, so instead of not signing anyone they chose to sign him and see what hapens.

No harms done to anyone, and the quest for the number center still goes on, this hasn't changed anything.

When you are trying to be right at all costs, reality becomes obsolete.

looking forward to see him play. A small guy but if he can play center that can't hurt us , we desperately need depth at center

I've got no problem with the signing (if true).

But i disagree with your opinion on the 1 milion been nothing.

The teams that realize you can have an effective 4th line of "Kostopoulos" kind of guys at 0,7M/year instead of 1M/year will be those winning year-in year-out before too long.

It doesnt seems huge, but that's already 1M$ save for better use if the entire 4th line makes 0,7M (or so).

1M$ better spend on a player of Beauchemin caliber instead of Morris (total guess). Or a Savard instead of a Lang (another guess).

Every single dollar counts and makes a difference.

The $1.07M contract number is probably including bonuses. Chill out.

Anyhow lets wait and see how he adapts to the north american game before we bash or praise this move. He could be the next Grabovski (with a better attitude) or the next Janne Lathi, I don't see how taking this chance hurts us for now.

don't know how anyone can call this a good or a bad move...

we'll have to wait and see, likely not much of a chance for him to see NHL action in the first year, and if he does, it's likely because the team is struggling with injuries or performance, or because Metropolit and Chipchura have failed to deliver as 4th line guys.

not crazy about paying a guy 1M as a rookie (if he does hit the NHL for us) 4th liner, hard to believe there aren't any vet grinderAHL/borderline NHL type guys that could have been found for less to supplement our C depth, but gainey must have seen something in this guy that makes him believe he could be an effective 3rd liner at some point.

Maybe because Gainey knows already that he won't be able to sign many of them...

Here's Johansson's last 3 seasons playing for Färjestad in Sweden's Elite league:

2006-2007 55 7 9 16 42
2007-2008 53 15 24 39 80
2008-2009 49 6 28 34 20

Not really loving the drop off from 15 to 6 goals...

IF he is signed, I wouldn't expect him to get more then 20-30 points playing on the 3rd or 4th line. More then that and it would be a pleasant surprise.

If we have been patient with guys like Lats and Gorges, we have to give the same opportunity to Johansson, even if he's coming from Europe.

This is Lahti all over again.

My prediction: he will end up playing in the AHL, he'll be pretty average, and by January everyone will have forgotten him.

And if he ends up a steal - great! But this is a depth move, nothing more.

Don't even get me started on Koivu, he has the heart of a lion, but the fact that we surrounded his tiny, broken down body with the likes of Perreault and Juneau just makes me want to vomit.

None of those guys I mentioned were elite point producers while they were with Montreal. None of them were elite in any category, other than Perreault and his faceoffs. You just simply cannot have 2 or 3 centermen under 5'11, on the same team at the same time, if none of them are star players. Boston must have looked at our lineup, saw Koivu, Plekanec, Lapierre and Metropolit down the middle, and laughed themselves silly.

If we went out and exchanged Plekanec for Crosby, that's a different story. We'd still have three 5'10 centerman, but one of them just happens to be the best ****ing player in the world. The team we have as it is constructed now, has absolutely no chance. A small, weak 60 point player. Followed by a small, weaker 50 point player. Followed by a decent sized, gritty 30 point player. Followed by a small, weak 20 point player. Just no chance. And it NEVER seems to change in Montreal.
Okay, i get where you're coming from and I agree with you.
