Rumor of the Week

In today's Courier-Post. Hockey sport's writer Chuck Gormley posted this in his Inside the NHL section."The Flyers will be the first team to offer Devils center John Madden a free agent contract. While it's true they need a starting goaltender and a dependable defenseman, the Flyers recognize the need for a defensive centerman who can win key faceoffs, and Madden is the perfect fit"

I think he would be a nice addition to the team and would take some of the burden off of Mike. However I just cannot see Lou letting him go.
Opinions anyone?

problems

1)PLease provide a link--that is rule one when it comes to rumours

2) Flyers have 49mill already towards the caop this next season. MAddon made 3mill lat season and I do not see him taking a pay cut. So this blind rumour means the flyers have a second trade mocing big bucks around lined up

I prefer Pahlsson to Madden. And I think he may be available this off season. Chicago has some guys do for raises soon, so I don't know that they're going to try to hold on to Sammi Pahlsson. If we could sign him for a Knubleish salary, that would represent a better use of cap space than Knuble IMO.

Briere and Giroux can and have played right wing.

Gagne - Richards - Briere
Hartnell - Carter - Giroux
Carcillo - Madden - Asham
Cote - Powe - whoever

I really can't see them sign Madden, unless he comes really cheap or they're moving Lupul+ in some way.

Didn't I say this before? Madden on a short term contract makes sense.

I'd be willing to bet he comes to Toronto.

Because?

Ooh ooh, I have a guess: His favorite letter is L.

Edit: You're not putting much stock into his prior relationship with Burke when he played with Anaheim are you? Also Pahlsson is going to be ~32 this off-season. Isn't that the kind of player Burke said he wasn't interested in bringing into the organization (30+ year old, vet role players)?

Nope. I don't think Burke will sign any other big name free agents. I do think he'll be looking for a veteran centreman to replace Moore, and possibly a rough winger. Pahlsson and Moen fit the bill if you ask me. Assuming they make it to free agency of course.

I don't recall him ever saying that. He said he'll play more rookies next year, but that doesn't preclude adding veterans to help bring them along. If you look at Burke's MO, this is typically what he does.

I like this move a lot. Madden is a strong hockey player and yes, the Flyers did not have the go to guy who wins the key draw in key areas. The thing about the Flyers depth at center is that Richards and Carter are truely their only top two centers. Giroux, Briere and Powe can all shift to the wing and perform well.

Adding a guy like Madden would do wonders for this young Flyers offense that needs this type of vet in the locker room.

I wouldn't mind Madden, the problem is how much is he going to get paid? Holmgren has shown that he's soft when negotiating with agents, so if this is the route to go, it has to be the perfect contract.

Frankly I think Philly can get other guys to do Maddens potential job for alot less cash, unless Madden is content with a big wage cut.

Why Madden over Pahlsson, most likely because Madden is much more familiar with the east.

file that comment under "all ufa's to TO for a discount" thread

my prediction is that every half decent UFA will be reported heading to TO in the off season--just becuse somebody believes that the player in question wants to play for the leafs

I think (okay, hope) that Lou will let Madden walk. But I have a hard time visualizing Madden in a Flyers jersey. It just doesn't compute.

I explained myself pretty clearly, and I specifically said that a player of that type was probably one of the only signings Burke will make. Why not actually respond to a post, rather than just spewing the "LOL leaf fans!!" garbage we always see around here?

Bingo. The Flyers are already at $54 million for next year without Knuble and with no goalie under contract. Not saying that Madden is not a possibility, but they have their work cutout again this year to remain under the cap, which is rumoured to go down $2-2.5 million this year.

I don't see how this 'makes no sense' for Philly.

Looking at their roster they could really use a solid checking line center to anchor the 3rd line so Giroux can play in the top 6 on the wing where he is likely to excel.

A trade involving Lupul would clear a lot of cap space, which would make this possible.

I can't picture Madden in the orange and black, but at the right price I'd be willing to try...that being said, would much prefer Pahlsson

I'd be pretty thrilled with either Madden or Pahlsson.

The constant playing of his line is one of the big reasons why the Devils lost to the Canes. I realize that is Sutter's fault more than his, but it seems like his best years are behind him.

And then you consider the fact that we don't need another center and Holmgren is an idiot when it comes to contracts.

I really hope this isn't true.

A player of this type is exactly what the Flyers need in their forward corps... not sure if Madden is that guy or not, but he fits the mold

I think the Flyers could use a guy like Madden, but I don't think Gormley knows what he is talking about so I take anything he says with a grain of salt.
