Smolenak signed with Nizhnekamsk(KHL)

He had a pretty solid season in the AHL last year(25+24 in 71) + he played 6 games for the Bolts getting 1 assist in the process.

I have a source in Russian, I will provide it if needed.

there's no information on the contract's length, but the signing is confirmed by the official website of the team.

Money Must Talk

Probably just boiled down the to money and maybe he wanted a change in scenery. A big blow to next year's AD's edition.

It can be whatever you want it to be with enough money.

Smoli started the year off pretty well (especially when he was on a line with Chewy and Segal). I can't speak for everybody, but several STH noticed that his attitude changed when he was sent back to Norfolk and Chewy stayed in Tampa after their first call-ups.

Obviously, he is the only person who would be able to tell you if that really got to him that much. There were times, however, when he would take penalties at bad times and fight when it was apparent Rumble didn't want the team engaging. I can recall a couple of times later in the season when Smoli would come out of the box after serving a penalty and not leave the bench for the rest of the game, regardless of the period.

Head Butting

No head butting last season. Now the season before, Smolenak was exiled to the ECHL. Once back from there, he underwent a very drastic and positive attitude change. He turned into a real agitator who could score. Also started showing a real physical side to his game. And he would drop the gloves if necessary.

He carried that good change over to this season. I really do think he'd bought into what Rumble wanted from him.

He will be a serious loss to the ADs for next year. But he was a RFA, so that might have concerned him.

Damn. Smoke was really on his way to becoming an NHL player IMO and I thought he had a great shot to possibly make the team out of camp especially with how the bottom 6 spots are essentially up for grabs with what we've been hearing from Lawton. Disappointing for sure and a blow to Norfolk.

I believe I read somewhere its a two year deal, not known if there is an out clause. I really liked Smolenak's play when he was called up, I felt he is the style of player Tocchet would really like, sucks to hear him sign in the KHL but thats going to be a lot more common thing nowadays. I betcha this summer more players sign with the KHL then ever before.

I don't think that's going to happen. KHL has foreigner restrictions for all Russian clubs and most clubs have already filled these spots. You can expect movement of former Soviet republics NHLers like Afinogenov, Kozlov, Fedorov, Grabovski, Antropov(all players from former Soviet Union states do not count as foreigners) and so on, but europeans and north american not so much.

saw this on boltprospects

here's the czech-english translated page

Quote:
"It was not easy decision. If I felt the chance that I will be in the first team and spend the entire season in the NHL, I would definitely stay. But more than to stay on the farm, I prefer to give priority to Russia. I had offers from other leagues, but the Continental League attracted me a lot and are attracted, "admits.
Quote:
Next season will be from my point of view, any interest. I will go to Russia, try the KHL. I am curious myself. but definitely not say that I got from the overseas. One would certainly like to return there, "he adds finally.

Just guessing --- NEEZ-neh-komsk with the Z or zh having more of a 'juh' or 'zuh' sound than a normal 'z' or 's'

So, it seems he views the KHL being better than the AHL but less than the NHL. Which money and location wise for him it probably is. Unless he really breaks out with a stellar enough season there to merit the Lightning signing him as an NHL regular (one-way?) he likely won't be back. As good asset management its probably still in the teams best interests to tender him an offer and retain his rights. Going off similar situations on other teams the past few years I'm not too optimistic he ever makes it back.

Smolenak failed to impress during training sessions and was waived by Neftekhimik.

I hope he decides to come back now. Maybe he can turn this negative into a positive and get determined to work even harder. He could earn another call up
