Hes got the toughness and the scoring touch but is still very inconsistent. I wouldn't mind keeping him, though.

So what happens now? Does he play in a lower level league in Russia or come back where he definietly won't get a nhl job?
No. Also, it's not like he isn't good enough to play in KHL. It's just that they have only 5 import spots so the competition is pretty hard. Though, I think it's quite strange they waived him. He was among the better players for them during pre-season.

He still battles consistency nightly.

Lawton said in the Tampa Tribune this morning that he was expecting Smolenak back with the Lightning.

It's gotta be pretty embarrassing for him, especially since he probably would have been one of the top candidates for a bottom 6 role and now he is probably destined for Norfolk.

He was also skating this morning. I heard his issue is proving to the NHL that he is out of the Russian contract.

I'm sure this is a little humbling for him.

Had the chance to catch up with Smolenak to ask him how things went during camp over with his Russian team, where he was released from his contract. His first comment on the situation was: “I hated it over there.’‘. That about sums up the whole situation. Basically, he said, the team was looking to bring in another import player (teams are allowed five) and when he heard that, he was more than happy to inform the team that he would be willing to be released. His agent worked on it and Smolenak received his wish. He’s happy to be back and ready to go to work.

And while he called the entire experience "a great one," he added, "I'm happy I'm not there anymore."

Asked what the problem was, Smolenak said, "The city wasn't like New York City. It was pretty painful."

Smolenak, from Prague, said his plan was to play a year in Russia and then come back to the Lightning, which would still have held his North American rights. Smolenak said each Russian league team can have five imports. When he heard his team, which was at the limit, wanted to add another, he volunteered to leave, and he said worked with the team to get released from his contract.

Anyone else feel like everything this offseason is working out perfectly for the Lightning? I feel like the season is either going to be incredible or everything is just going to crash down.

They took smart gambles. They didn't risk unnecessary assets (Lundin) and they let go on two gambles that already have replacements in place (Smoke, Ramo).

Good management. Lawton is doing a lot better than I expected, so far.

I still love the fact that Niittymaki signed for less than Ramo's qualifying offer.
