GDT: PHI @ CAR 7pm on CSN

vs.

GAME: Philadelphia Flyers (38-18-14-6) at Carolina Hurricanes (26-30-13-6).

TIME: Tuesday, 7 p.m. EST.

While the other four teams fighting for the East's best record face one another, the Philadelphia Flyers play one of the conference's worst teams as they visit the Carolina Hurricanes.

The crowded race at the top of the East has Philadelphia trailing conference-leading Tampa Bay by one point. Next in the standings is Boston, two points behind the Lightning, while Toronto is three back and Ottawa four back.

Tampa visits Toronto on Thursday while Ottawa plays at Boston.

"Our goal is to win the division first," said right wing Mark Recchi, whose Flyers have a six-point lead over New Jersey in the Atlantic. "If there's an opportunity to be first in the conference, we learned from last year that you have to try to get the highest seed you can."

The Flyers settled for the No. 4 seed last season after finishing a point behind the Devils for the division crown, and went through a grueling seven-game series with Toronto in the first round of the playoffs. Philadelphia bowed out to Ottawa in the next round.

Philadelphia faces a Carolina team tied for the fourth-fewest points in the East. Plus, the Flyers have lost only once in the last 14 meetings with the Hurricanes (9-1-4).

That doesn't mean Carolina will roll over.

The Hurricanes have been playing well, recording at least a point in six straight. They are coming off a 3-0-0-2 road trip, which included wins over Tampa Bay and Ottawa.

Carolina beat the Senators 3-2 on Saturday thanks to Bret Hedican's goal with 59.3 seconds left in overtime.

"This was a big character builder for us," said Carolina's Sean Hill, who scored his fourth goal in five games. "For us to beat them at this time of year is a bit of a feather in our cap."

This is the first game between these teams since the Flyers traded winger Justin Williams to the Hurricanes for defenseman Danny Markov on Jan. 20. Williams has five goals and nine assists in 26 games with Carolina.

Markov has just five points with Philadelphia, but maybe more importantly, he has yet to miss a game with his new team.

The Flyers have endured injuries to their defense throughout the season. They could be without defensemen Eric Desjardins, Vladimir Malahkov and Dennis Seidenberg for the rest of the regular season.

While Philadelphia expects center Jeremy Roenick to return Saturday after missing six weeks, the status of Keith Primeau remains uncertain due to severe concussion symptoms.

Update: JR could be back by Thursday vs. NYI and Primeau could also be back this week as well according to the Inquirer.

Tonight is an important game for the Flyers. If they win this game and TB loses, they climb into the top spot in the East. CAR isn't to be taken lightly because teams like this have nothing to lose. They are all competing for jobs next year. They have a lot of good, young players like Willy, Staal, Cole, Vasicek and good veteran defensemen in Wesley, Hedican and Hill. There is no word on who is in net for the Canes, could be Irbe or Weekes. Burke is in net for the Flyers, so the team is really going to be on their game tonight since the past few outing for Burke have been less than stellar. I think most of the guys know if they win this, they have a chance to take #1 spot and try and hold on to it. TB has been losing as of late and the fact that they play TOR tonight goes in our favor.

Flyers 5
Canes 2

It will also be cool to see Willy play against his former teammates. He seems to be developing down in CAR and getting more ice time since Francis left. He will have the chance to step up and show how good a player he is. The kid has a bright future.

Man, it will be so weird to see Jwill in a Canes uni. So anyway, I think that the Flyers have to be motivated for this game, they've let 8 or so easy points slip away this year and they know that. I think that they will come out strong and hopefully play some good defense, if Escher starts.........

Flyers 3 (Zeus, Rex, Gags)
Canes 1 (Williams)

If Burke Starts

For whatever reason we play well against he good teams and then falter against the weak teams. Washington and Pittsburgh come to mind.

Hopefully I am wrong but with Boourke in nets we may as well give Carolina a few goals in order for Boourke to maintain his stellar 3.50 GAA.

Philly 4
Car 4

Prime opportunity to capitalize on the favourable schedule. TB loss + PHI win/tie = PHI in 1st place.
I say a 4-2 Flyers win. Burke's in net, but it's only the offensively impotent Canes.

for some reason they have struggled against the lower tier teams not named the Rangers. teams like the Canes,Pens,Caps ect have played the Flyers pretty tough this year. i'd look for more of the same

Flyers 4(Recchi,Johnsson,Leclair,Gagne)
Canes 3(Vasicek,Craig Adams,Vrabada)

yeah, this should be an easy 2 points. so the Flyers have to come out and play strong because the way that the Bolts are playing, they are trying to give us first.

anyway, let's say...
Flyers - 4
Canes - 2

GO FLYERS!

Burke is in goal so Ill go for a 4-2 or 5-2 win for the Canes with Williams getting a couple of points.

I hope a really good game from the guys tonight. Burke is in net but he's looking for redemption. So I guess he will have a good game.
Nice to see Willy too. It will be an emotional game for him.

W/O Malakhov, will Pitkanen return to early season form and generate a little offence or has Hitchcock given up on him for this season? If he has given up on him, why not give up on the old guy Burke too and let Esche carry the load the rest of the way??

Ah well! 5-4 Philly Recchi X2, Leclair, Fedoruk, Jonnson.....

Williams was thier top scorer as soon as he was traded...that's how bad offensivley they are.

Anyways If Irbe is starting I'll go

PHI - 6---Zhamnov (2),Gags, Pitkanen (PP), Leclair (PP), Lapionte (EN) We are so due for a 5-6 goal game.
CAR - 3---Williams, Brindy, Brendl (The old flyer connection)

If Weeks is starting (Who I think is the most underrated goalie in the league)

PHI - 3 Zhamnov (2), Gags
Car - 2 Willaims, Brindy

I think the Flyers lay the smackdown.

Flyers 7 (Zhamnov 2, Gagne, Handzus, Markov, Kapanen, Recchi)

Canes 3 (Staal, Vasicek, Wallin)

How do you all keep in touch with the game?

I'm in England so it's NHL.com (WIP) radio for me.

The critics haven't gone away because the Flyers have beaten close to no one with Burke in net since his first 2 games against the Rangers. You continue to give more credit to certain people than is due just because you seem to think that you have to be blind to be a loyal fan to the team.

Burke is barely clinging onto a .500 record as a Flyer and barely clinging onto a GAA of under 3.

That makes 3 Flyer fans in England, a couple more and we will have more fans than the Devils in NJ!

I dont mind, Id settle for a Leafs Sens matchup in round 1 with the Flyers playing the Habs or Isles.

btw, is Burke sucking as much as I imagine he is?
