I don't hate having Briere on the team and would be content to have him on the team next year, IF, we were not so tight to the cap and he hadn't just come off a very frustrating injury season. This past season was pretty much a write off for him. If you give him the credit he earned from his playoff performance 2 seasons ago, he deserves a 3rd season to prove himself.

With that said, I don't like the look of bottom 6 forwards, the cap is probably going to significantly drop for 2010-11 and if he has a poor season this year he becomes all that more untradable. So if there is a deal out there where the Flyers can land a decent asset or player, do it now.

Pretty good article here:

http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/news...o-himself.html

Quote:

The veteran may be shifting from center to right wing after a season marred by injuries.

VOORHEES, N.J. - At 31 and with 204 NHL goals under his belt, Daniel Briere's career credentials would appear to be above all reproach.

But the Flyers veteran, who was limited by abdominal/groin injuries to just 11 goals last season, claims he still has something to prove.

Not to teammates, fans or management.

Just to himself.

He wants to rejoin the ranks of the league's premier players. And to do that, he's probably going to have to accept a position move from his familiar center post to right wing.

With Mike Richards and Jeff Carter entrenched in the first two pivot spots and sophomore Claude Giroux's star seemingly rising by the minute, Briere knows such a transfer to wing will benefit everyone.
Quote:
Briere sounds like he's almost willing to play goalie if it will help the team win a title.

"This is my third year here and I've said it from Day 1, it doesn't matter if I'm in the middle or at wing,'' Briere said. "Wherever John thinks is best, that's where I'm going to be. It's not an issue at all.''

We need Briere now that Knuble and Lupul are gone. As for the future I'm not sure. Depends if he can still produce as he ages. He's starting to get old for a hockey player. At this point though he has more value to the team then Gagne in terms of point production and eventually we're going to have to let one of our pricey forwards go.

I really feel for briere. He has done nothing but lace them up and give the team 100% and constantly gets ****ted on by our fans. Hell he even let his injury linger a little longer so we could sort out our cap to let him play. He managed 70 points in his first season with 13 different linemates. He was even booed at our home ground then.

Then he is constantly under scruitiny because he signed for less money to help the flyers regain their position at the top of the tree. If Richards maxed out as a 40 point player, nothing would of been said above briere

I really want to see Danny do well. I want to see him lifting that cup above his head because of all the **** our fans have put him through in two seasons.

I am getting ready for 90pts season from Dany.

1st season Gagne was injured.
2nd season Briere was injured.

Can not wait for 3rd season. He is motivated.

Agreed. If I were him I'd be chomping at the bit to get out there and earn my contract.

Yup, my guess for points is 92 points missing 6 games with the flu and other minor injuries.

Haha

I hope he kicks ass this year, then gives the finger to everybody at HFBoards.
Many fans were/are way too harsh on him.

I hope so too.

My 'issue' with Briere last season was that I don't think he was being honest with both himself, and team doctors. While I can admire the competitive spirit and hunger of trying to get back in the lineup...it cost the team.

Also, he's our highest paid player but not our best player. I know that's not his problem, he just signed the contract...but still.

I'm hoping for a huge year from Danny Boy.

Ditto. He's hard to associate a production number with though. I'm going to guess at 28 goals and 42 assists and be pleasantly surprised if he hits 80 points and can hold his own at even strength. It's really only a question of being healthy for him.

There's nothing to miss, it's simple math.

Montreal offered him $49M and we offered him $52M.

This is a no brainer. What happens if we trade him and gagne re injures that groin and he's done. I don't care if Pronger has the best year of his career, that is not enough offense without Gagne or Briere no matter who we got for Briere. Especially if Emery doesn't pan out good at all. I'm sorry and this may make everyone on this board pissed coming from a flyer fan, but Giroux is not going to score 30 goals this year. I've seen people saying 40? Jesus Christ he's a play maker for one before a goal scorer even though he is this franchises future. And I'm sick and tired of seeing threads like this. BRIERE IS NOT ****ING GOING ANYWHERE. GET THE **** OVER IT. You'll see what this team will be without him this year in the playoffs with Carter not doing dog **** in them again. And i know he was hurt last year, so i give him a break. Just every body shut the **** up Briere isn't going anywhere. Sorry for the people who feel the same as me.

Do some people not realize this thread and the opinions in it are from like four months ago, well before Lupul and Knuble went elsewhere?

^^ i think term of contract would be the difference between mtl and us. We gave him a longer one at less per year.

Another Briere article...

http://www.courierpostonline.com/app...plate=printart

Quote:
Danny Briere darted down the right wing, a vapor trail in his wake. He hit the brakes at the goal line, waited for a defenseman to pressure him, then deftly slid a pass onto the awaiting stick blade of rookie James van Riemsdyk.

Van Riemsdyk seemed startled by Briere's pinpoint pass through traffic and flubbed the shot, but took away his first NHL lesson.

"I've never played with guys who can get me the puck from just about everywhere," the 20-year-old native of Middletown said. "I've got to be even more ready because you don't expect guys to be able to see what they see out there."

Flyers coach John Stevens is experimenting with a forward line combination of Briere and van Riemsdyk on either side of sophomore center Claude Giroux. And while Jeff Carter stole the show Tuesday with two goals in the morning scrimmage, Briere's explosiveness spoke volumes about how far he has come since missing 53 games with groin strains last season.

"To me he looks a lot better," Stevens said. "He looks more confident -- he looks quicker -- he looks like he can get to loose pucks and pop in holes. I think his summer training is going to do a world of good for him because he needs to have his quickness to be the player we all know he can be."
Quote:
Stevens said he is unsure whether Briere will play alongside Richards, Carter or Giroux this season, but expects the center-turned-right wing to be a big part of the Flyers' offense, both at even-strength and on the power play.

Briere admits that some of his offensive creativity might be compromised as a right wing, but said he's always considered himself equal parts playmaker and goal scorer and is anxious to prove that last season was merely a speed bump.
