My question for the Calgary fans is, what are you looking for? Personally I think you should rebuild because Kipper is getting old and Iginla is almost there. But then again, you're only a couple players away from being a contender too...
If you're looking to rebuild, LA can make you an offer for Phaneuf. I know he's young but he's the most valuable piece you got that you could get 3 or more for 1 and hasten the rebuild.
That for Phaneuf?... not a chance!. Holy crap what happened why so little for Phaneuf a 24 year old that's a year off of a 60 point year!...
Phaneuf's value has been impacted because of the salary cap... he is being paid like he's in his prime right now, and coming off a season where he looked like he was a long way from being that top end dman...
I have no doubt that he's bounce back and have a solid career... he is a very talented player. But right now he's *massively* overpaid for everything he brings, when you consider how much of a liability he was in his own zone last year - statistically one of the worst dmen in the entire NHL defensively.
When you throw in a $6.5mill/yr cap hit against that, there are only a few teams in the NHL that have the cap space and team budget to take a gamble on him like that... you can't wait till he's 28-30 to perform at such a high level when you're paying him that much money right now, and the cap is expected to go down over the next couple seasons.
When you're in a salary cap world, a player's value isn't just based on his on-ice performance, and in Phaneuf's case, his potential to be a great dman... salary factors in, and he's right now a huge liability at the $$ he's making... again no doubt that he improves, but how many teams realistically will lock up $6.5mill of cap space at a time when very few teams have cap space to begin with, and especially when you're heading into a UFA market.
Personally, I don't think any team even makes an offer for Phaneuf right now... that would be the perfect situation for Calgary - clear up Phaneuf's contract, get some solid assets back, and then use that cap space to sign JBo as a FA.... I don't see any team giving them that kind of luxury right now, not until JBo is off the market.
And then the few teams that have some cap space right now will be looking to FA to fill those holes - further reducing the number of teams that can even have the space to add Phaneuf longterm.
again, I'm not suggesting he doesn't have great potential and should be one of the better dmen in the game eventually, but right now, cap space is a valuable commodity and in a market where pretty much every team is losing money (at least south of the border), there's a lot of risk attached to a $6.5mill dman who's coming off the season that Phaneuf has had, and going into a cap recession over the next couple years.
