Howard Berger: Mikhail Grabovski might file for salary arbitration later this summer

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=3

Quote:
The Leafs’ GM also indicated there has been no progress toward signing forward Mikhail Grabovski to a contract extension, and Grabovski — a restricted free agent — is threatening to take the club to arbitration later this summer. “From my perspective, I’m not sure what the arbitration patterns will be,” Burke said. “The last couple of years, there weren’t a lot of arbitration [cases], but the player has a vehicle to force us to pay him what he thinks is fair. I have no idea whether that’ll be the case with Mikhail.

“I have really simple rules: Once a player files for arbitration, we go. There are no settlements on the courtroom steps, and the player has to know that. We are going to arbitration at that point. I respect the process; it’s part of the CBA, and if the award is something we don’t like, we have the option to walk away. Or, we have the option to peddle the player. But, Mikhail’s a good kid and I’d like to keep him.”

2 year deal for $5.5 anything else at this point would be way to much for somone with a career high 48 points

Its Howard Berger. Enough said.

Seriously though... With Grabovski or Not... we're going to be a different team next year. If Grabovski leaves... Stajan stays. If Grabovski stays, Stajan leaves.

Meh, I'm one of the few that wouldn't care if he left.

They should both go.

If Stajan had Grabs grit and if Grabs had Stajan's size then I would reconsider.

I didn't really like the kid from the beginning. I'm really hoping he's not asking for too much. Anything over 2.5 per year and I walk, don't want the kid and say "screw you". He was a 25 year old rookie who got the opportunities he had and put up the points he did because of the team he was on. He whined and whined in Montreal, maintains a childish feud with Kostitsyns, and I have no doubt there will be more incidents with him in the future. He's generally a pretty selfish player, and plays bad without the puck.

On second thought, trade him. He's not the kind of player I would like on my team in terms of play and character. As long as we get more in return then what we gave up to get him, I would pull the trigger and celebrate with a nice slab of medium rare steak.

I hope they keep Grabo. He looked more and more like a real NHL center and was fantastic in the World Championships. He looked a little bit like Datsyuk there, actually..

If he wants a ticket out of town that badly, then he should go for it.

I really like Grabo but he should get somewhere between 2-3 million more towards 2.5 or less. Krejci got 73 points this year and got 3.5, so he shouldn't get more than that.

I absolutely hope the resign Grabovski. I think they will, too. Wilson likes him, Burke respects that.

2 million is the max I would pay him.

Krejci got 3.5 and had 73pts. Grabo had 48pts. You're damn right he shouldn't get more than 3.5.

I know, I know, last Fall you predicted he'd bust big time. Well, he didn't. I was never enamoured with him msyelf and against the trade that brought him here. But he's going to get somewhere over $2 million per season and everyone is going to have to deal with it. That's the market value for his stats and projected role going forward.

I agree, he's the best pure skill guy the Leafs have. the only player to single-handedly lift fans of your seat.

I liked him better later on too but dissing Grabovski wasn't what I was doing. I was just imagining Burke's reaction when he finds out about that Grabovski wants to use his stats a lot of which was earned during garbage time in order to get a huge raise.

guys, salary isn't entirely based on point production. there are a lot of factors at play here.

considering Stajan got 2 million for doing crap the season he signed he earned the contract, I expect it to be alittle more.

I think 2.5M is fair. I'm hoping Burke gets him signed... or some team gives him an outrageous offer, and we get a 1st and 3rd as compensation.

Two year deal, 1.8M$ the first season, 2.2M$ the second, 2M$ cap hit.

No more. Hasn't cleared 48 points in a season, I can't see the arbitrator going higher than this.

I heard Burke was hard-lining Grabovski's agent at Stajan money (1.7-1.75M per year) and Grabovski's agent is saying 2.6M back. Neither side is moving toward the center at all.

But that's just from a personal contact with direct ties to Mikhail, not ties to the agent or Burke.

Exactly my thoughts.

No use for Grabo at HIS price.

I don't think he should be paid a king's ransom or whatever, but he's the kind of player you really want to have in the lineup.

Sprinkle a Grabovski on Pittsburgh's forward lines and I imagine they'd match up against Detroit a little better.
