Best Rookie Defenseman

Besides Zidlicky who is the best rookie defenseman this year? Is it Liles, Hamhuis, Pitkanen, Erhoff, Grebeshkov, Martin, or somebody else? Im gonna go with John-Michael Liles.

I'm not saying he is the best but what do people think of Tom Preissing? His smarts on the ice have really impressed me.

For best I'll take Hamhuis.

As a Flyers fan my heart says Pitkanen

My head says you can't go wrong with either Pitkanen or Liles. Pitkanen has a better +/-. Liles has more assists and more games played. They have the same amount of goals. And their average ice times are so close it's scary... so pick your poison in my mind.

One question for Av's fans. How much PP time does Liles see?

Paul Martin is logging 25 minutes of ice time every night, and has been as solid as anyone I've seen. In terms of consistancy and quality of play, you have to choose Martin. He can hold the puck in the zone better than anyone I know, and he's rarely caught out of position.

What, no love for Orpik?
He's already becoming the next great defensive defensman of the NHL.

Liles had to be assisted off the ice with an apparent knee injury. He couldn't put any pressure on his right leg. The Avs are saying today that he is day-to-day with a knee bruise and they have recalled a player from Hershey. I've seen the highlight numerous times and I can't figure out how he just suffered just a "knee bruise." If that's the case he is truly fortunate, it could have been alot worse.

He's physical thats for sure, but when I've seen the Pens he hasn't stood out a whole lot besides a few real beauts of checks... he may become the next Stevens-esque player because he hits hard and borderline dirty sometimes.

That being said he doesn't have the two-way game the other players here have. He would make my list easily if it was all about defense, but unfortunately its not this day in age.

it looked like the old skate-caught-in-the-rut injury. knee sprain if he's lucky.

All right, I'll throw out my homer statistics

J. Liles, COL D 76 8 23 31
Joni Pitkanen, PHI D 67 8 17 25
Dan Hamhuis, NSH D 75 6 17 23
M. Bergeron, EDM D 48 8 14 22

Now if we look at points per game, and goals per game, we get

Player goals/game points/game
Liles 0.105 0.408
Pitkanen 0.119 0.373
Hamhuis 0.08 0.307
Bergeron 0.166 0.459

Having said all this, I might still pick one of the other d-men if I weren't such a homer, but Bergeron gets no credit for a guy leading all dmen in points, goals, and assists per game.

Liles is on the Avs first PP unit. He really worked his way up through the season, moving Morris to the second unit long before he was traded. 13 of Liles 31 points have come on the power play. He handles the puck well. His size was a bit of a factor earlier in the season, but he is quick at making adjustments. He doesn't get knocked down as much and his positioning is very good (and I imagine his number of takeaways is very very good), better than most would expect. Liles also has a bit of a "Chris Drury" aura about him.

I have been very impressed with Liles, Hamhuis and Pitkanen. I will also give some praise to Preissing. Being a DU fan I've seen enough of Tom to make me sick, but I would be a fool to ignore how well he has played this year. It's nice to see the college defensemen (Liles/Preissing) adjusting so quickly to the NHL.

I have to go with Pitkanen. He is a big reason the Flyers powerplay is #1 this year.

You mean this season.

The Penguins are the #1 PP this year.

As a Pens fan, Orpik should be mentioned as one of the better defenseive rookie defensemen. But he doesn't deserve mentioned with offensive or two way defenseman for now which all of the others in this thread are.
