I think its a smart strategy. If Toronto are hell bent of moving up in the draft I hope Atlanta does propose the 4th Pick for 7th Pick + Kaberle. If they do acquire Kaberle, Atlanta gets a bona fide all star defenseman for next season and/or the opportunity to move him (or Hainsey) as a valuable trade asset. The 7th pick also will still be very good as one of Kane, MSP, Schenn or Cowan will still be available.
We need another offensive defenseman like we need a hole in the head.
Adding that salary would pretty much prevent us from getting any additional help this offseason, if our internal salary cap number is to be believed. It does nothing to cut down our goals against or improve our PK.
In addition, it is rumored that a team that lost out on Jay Bo is the team that made the offer. That is not us.
I like the idea of trading picks with Toronto, but picking up Kaberle really isn't a good idea, unless we plan on shippin gone of Salmela, Bogosian, Enstrom or Hainsey off, none of which I'm willing to part with. That's not entirely true, I would be ok with moving Hainsey if Kaberle came here, but trading someone we signed last offseason for 4 years is pretty dickish, and inadvisable.
I'll own up to being a d*ick if this comes true. But please, "a source told us..."?
Who's the source, a janitor in the Leafs office that heard 10 seconds of a conversation and filled in the blanks on his own. Come to think of it, that can describe how half of the reporters give us these rumors (especially around draft/UFA time).
It's the silly season for rumors. This is just another in the long line of craptastic rumors we'll see today.
If we are involved in a Kaberle 3-way trade, maybe, but like it has already been said he is not the type of defenseman we need. DW said that right now defenseman have a much lower price tag thru trade than forwards, so it looks like blueline help will be the trade target and forward thru FA?
