Burke's Magic

I know this is probably not going to happen but wouldn't it be great if Burke can pull off the same kinda trade that he did in 1999 this year. The deal in 1999 was this

To Van: 2nd overall pick

To Chi: Bryan McCabe and 1st in 2000 or 2001.

Chicago took the 2000 pick which eventually was the #11 overall (Pavel Vorobiev)

lol now 10 years later

To Tor: 2nd overall

To Tampa: Ian White, 1st in 2010(Top 5 protected) or 2011

Never happen! But it would be cool for us.

What about something like this though

To Tor: 2nd overall pick, Ryan Malone(Salary Dump)

To Tampa: Pavel Kubina, Dmitri Vorobiev, Joel Champagne 1st in 2010, 2nd in 2009

The 1999 nhl entry draft.......worst draft I've ever seen. Maybe the 2nd worst draft ever. It isn't going to happen this year.

The 1993 draft is probably a better one to look at.

Sergei Makarov(great player), 6th overall pick(Viktor Kozlov, had all the tools to be a great player unfortunately he sucked.) 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick for Chris Pronger.

Edit: Actually maybe it'll work.

So, in all reality do you really beleive the Ian White who played in 2008-2009 has comparable value the to the Bryan McCabe who played in 1998-1999?

This should have been entiltled "wet dreams"

swing and a miss. You first need to include our first this year not next. Vorobiev doesn't look to ever be coming over and was sat out by the league for his heart problem. Kubina is great but not what TB needs and Champagne is a b prospect.

The league ten years ago is not the same as the one you see now. Young players are more valuable than they have ever been.

Zetterberg went pretty late

Theres always great players drafted in the late rounds. Not enough to consider it a good draft.

Look at the 6th round of the 1996 nhl entry draft.

Trent Hunter
Kent Huskins
Chris Neil
Ales Kotalik
Andrei Markov
Antero Niittymaki
Pavel Datsyuk
Niko Kapanen

and in other rounds guys such as Erik Cole, Shawn Horcoff, Andrew Raycroft Alexei Ponikarovsky Brad Richards and Rob Scuderi were taken. Now thats what I call a deep draft. Not to mention lots of great players drafted in the second.

'99? Not so much.

A dman with one year left on his contract and left TB 3 years ago
A dman that will likely never come to NA
A forward that wouldn't crack a teams top 10 prospect list
A first rounder that could end up being in the middle of the round
A 2nd rounder which is always something "nice" to have

This lovely package for a franchise forward or franchise dman. BTW, I don't see how Ryan Malone is a salary dump. He was one of the better forwards for TB last season imo. He's a PF type that can score 25 goals a year. Sure he doesn't have the greatest contract but Malone has value imo.

Brian Burke is more of an illusionist than a magician.

Burke will end up doing nothing on draft day other than picking 7th overall and complaining about how the other GMs demanded too much, when in reality he just has nothing (other than Luke Schenn) to offer.

McCabe was also considerably better then White with tons of upside.

so you want to obtain the 2nd overall pick and are willing to trade next years 1st rounder thats top 5 protected? Thats a bit unrealistic isnt it? Sort of like a slap in the face?

Replace Ian White with Luke Schenn as a Bryan McCabe comparable, in that proposal. 1999 was one of the worst drafts ever. 2009 looks to be an extremely strong draft class.

Soo.... if Tampa says the only way you're getting the 2nd overall is for Schenn, Kaberle, and the 7th overall, the best business move is to counter with White and a 1st rounder that they most likely won't be receiving?

Pure brilliance. I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
