I see that Salo is still one of the most under appreciated defensemen in the NHL.

Probably because his playoff stats were horrible.

holy cow - I'm not a JJ fan, in fact I went on a bit of a drunken tirade about him in another thread (not my best post) - but if the Canucks landed him for a that package I'd do a little dance. Salo is a very good positional and transition dman, but he'll miss half the season with some self-inflicted injury, and Hansen is a very solid, gritty forward who could, under the right circumstances get you 30 pts - but JJ (even with his flaws) has top pairing potential. Deal - do it, do it.

(It reminds me of a hit from The Mighty Ducks movies.)

Ok, when healthy Salo is our best defenseman..

He's the only guy we have who is actually mobile and is the ONLY guy we have who can rip it up on the powerplay. He's also good defensively. He also makes no mistakes.. Like seriously, watch him out there... No stupid turn overs or bad passes... He's a damn steal at 3.5mil...

But now, he's only good for like... 60-70 games a season it seems. He is the best player in the deal IMO when he's healthy and playing.

Jannik Hansen is the next Burrows. In his rookie season (this season) he had better offensive numbers than either Kesler or Burrows in their rookie seasons.

Anyways I'm not saying I would or wouldn't do this trade... But to LA fans, your not getting a bad deal AT ALL. Hansen is a great speedy grit winger with offensive upside for the 3rd line (top 6 potential I'd say) and Salo is a top 4 offensive D who can also play top shutdown pair.

Btw, Salo produced at a PPG pace in the playoffs this year.

Obviously this deal favors Vancouver.

But i just want to say, that when actually playing and not injured, Sami Salo is better than Edler Bieksa Ohlund etc..

he's very very good.....just brittle as hell

I think van would have to add in a very good prospect for l.a to accept

The Kings are built for 3+ years from now (as it stands now they will be lucky to make to playoffs in the 2009-10 season)......so getting a 34 year old defenseman for 2 more years accomplishes nothing for the Kings....no matter how good he may or may not be.

What a lousy rumor. LA gives Johnson another year or trade him for better value.

Yeah, the Salo NTC thing is a problem. Perhaps CKNW just got that name wrong.

I can see Gillis being interested in possibly giving Johnson an offer sheet, and like he did with Backes and Bernier, he'll be letting LA know beforehand so maybe a deal can be reached instead.

Hansen has a Jere Lehtinen-type ceiling, but that'll take time and he needs to work on his shot and consistency.

Personally, i think there's a good chance that Johnson will be in Russia next season. He'll come back like Babchuk in Carolina did when there's a spot open for him. LA seems to be really high on Matt Greene right now.

But if Johnson is bolting for personal reasons, then you kinda have to question his ability to commit to ANY team...

In no particular order:

1) Sami Salo is a top 4 d-man in this league - you don't believe it I don't care!!

2) Salo is good for 65 games a year and about 30 points on average. Consistantly a + player and got us 7 points in the playoffs this year. At $3.5 million a year that is a bargain!!!

3) Jannik Hansen is a good young forward with tonnes of potential. Big (6'1 and 200lbs) and fast and decent defensively. He's 22, is an RFA coming off a $500,000 dollar contract and will get you 20 goals in the next year or two. For a team that is going young and is looking for more young forwards this is a kid to get.

4) Jack Johnson played 41 games last season...he is a -42 for his career while only putting up 22 points...refused to sign with the team that drafted him...is demanding to be moved out of LA (from what I read)...has a father that would make Carl Lindros blush...is demanding (according to Garrioch anyways) $5 million a year....

5) Canuck GM Gillis has said over and over and over again that he is looking for character players...Jack Johnson is not one of those guys...

Overall, a resounding no thanks from the Canucks.

Kind of a weird trade.

Either Johnson has little to no value at this point, or Lombardi is really high on Hansen, or possibly on Salo to mentor the young blueliners on LA.

If this happens, I think the Canucks will need to sign a big name UFA (Bouwmeester?) this summer, as their top two guys (Salo and Ohlund) will be gone.

Salo may have been the Canucks best all around dman when he was in the lineup, but his average icetime though the season was 5th on the Canucks blueline... his average icetime per game in the playoffs was also 5th.

Ohlund's icetime was dropping through the season, and he fell down the depth chart by the end of the season as well... he had a solid playoffs, but still finished 3rd in icetime in the playoffs as well.

Bieksa and Mitchell are the team's highest icetime dmen... and Edler has also passed Ohlund on the depth chart.

going into next season, Ohlund would have been 5th on the team's depth chart... Salo should be #3, and possibly #4 depending on how Edler's next step in development.

Not that I am defending this rumour, but why exactly does JJ has such super high trade value again? Two 11 point seasons don't jump out at me as a future offensive superstar, and if he indeed does want out of LA, then that is the 2nd team he is passing on. If he were taken 13th instead of 3rd, would anyone even know him? He sure wasn't noticeable in any of the Kings games I watched this year. Why does he have more trade value then say Cam Barker(also a 3rd pick), who imho has done much more so far?

If I was an LA fan, I'd rather see a bidding war over Johnson as an RFA and take the resulting picks over that package...

OT (and stupid question) - how did JJ become an RFA so fast when he only played 5 games in the 2006/07 season? So that means playing even those few games burned a year off his entry level contract?

From Garrioch today (yeah yeah I know..take it with a grain of salt). The reason for the Kings wanting to dump Johnson.....he wants $5.5 mil a year for 4 years.
