Bobby Hull, not close.

Don't let the career totals fool you. Brett was amazing, but Bobby may be the best ever. In the 1960's, Bobby Hull scored 30% more goals than anyone else. He led the league in goals on 7 occaisions (and was still a 50 goal scorer the season before he left for the WHA). It's very possible that he would have retired with over 800 goals if he played his whole career in the NHL.

Here's their seasons that placed top-10 in NHL goal scoring:

Brett: 1,1,1,2,6,8,9,10

Bobby: 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,3,4,5,6 (plus five more top-5's in the WHA)

Yes, Bobby would probably have 800ish NHL goals if not for the WHA. If you adjust for era, it's likely an even bigger margin.

I'll be surprised if Brett gets 1 vote, but I guess if you were just looking at the raw numbers I can see how you thought it would be close.

Bobby. I wouldn't say "it's not even close", but I would certainly say he is hands down the winner of this one. Not even a debate, really.

Bobby Hull was a much better hockey player then Brett Hull. Bobby wasn't just a goal scorer, he was a monster of a man and player. Physical player, skating ability, played all over the ice. Art Ross winner.

The only thing Brett was better at was finding open ice. But Brett needed someone to go get him the puck and pass it over, more often then not. Bobby was one of those guys who could go get the puck and keep it.

World of difference between the two. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed watching Brett play and enjoyed him as a player.

I was gonna say Bobby and not even close until I read your post. If we're talking only goalscoring, not taking anything else into account, it's much closer. I think I'd still go with the old fella though.

Thanks for reading my post.

Yes, goal scoring only. Speed, skating, slap shot, marquee value, marketing, attitude is all irrelevant in this poll.

I'd take Bobby all day long. Brett was really a 1-trick pony (granted, it was a damn fine trick...), but Bobby was just all out SCARY; hell, he still is, absolutely hilarious guy though.

Brett was a great player, and a deserving hall-of-famer. The guy at his peak was a goal scoring machine.

However Bobby is quite possibly the greatest goal scorer of all time. As such, this poll is an easy choice. The Golden Jet all the way.

Brett's career numbers are sexier, but the raw, cumulative numbers don't do Bobby ridiculous dominance any justice.

Gordie Howe is but Bobby is #2. Had Bobby remained in the NHL he could very well have ended up #1.

Bobby Hull won several of his scoring titles by huge margins.
In 61-62, he won it by 51.5% over the next closest scorer.
In 65-66, he won it by 68.8%.
In 66-67, he won it by 48.6%....
Etc

People who look at the raw scoring numbers need education of how much more difficult it was to score in the defense first 60's when they were only playing 70 games a season. Hull's 50+ goal seasons in the 60's would have been much more in the 80's when most teams forsook defense for offense. Even if you simply pro-rate his 70 game season to 80 game season, they turn into 57 goal season. Couple that with the higher scoring of the 80's, and Bobby Hull would have had the same peak scoring seasons as his son, only more than twice as many.

If you have a large intellect and low ego you will be a bad goal scorer?

yeah...but it's not like Brett was squeeking out goal-scoring titles either:

89-90: Brett Hull - 72, 2nd place (Steve Yzerman) - 62
90-91: Brett Hull - 86, 2nd place (Steve Yzerman) - 51
91-92: Brett Hull - 70, 2nd place (Kevin Stevens) - 54

Brett was as pure a pure-goal-scorer as there ever was...but Bobby still wins this poll easily.
