I want to know what you guys think of this deal...
It's definitely not a terrible proposal.
Blake Wheeler was the 5th pick overall a few years back. Last year as a rookie he led the league in +/-. He had over 40 points and over 20 goals.
Well he was 5th overall because Phoenix reached big time on him. +/- doesn't tell me anything other than that Wheeler played on the team with the most GF in the East and the least GA in the league. It's an overrated stat. He had a nice rookie season though.
Joe Colborne is a top prospect in the Bruins organization and often gets comparisons to Joe Thornton from his body type.
He's a nice prospect, but not in the Hedman/Tavares class. The Lightning are better served holding on to the pick, especially if the Isles take Tavares. Hedman is a bigger need to the Lightning right now than Wheeler,Colborne, and a late 1st. Nice pieces in this deal, but the Lightning would be better served holding on to the pick IMO.
the lightning are at a point defensively where they need quality and not quantity. we've stocked plenty of bodies who could mix and match in the bottom 2 pairs and eventually move up, but we need a rock on the first line...unless we can splice prospects to create better defenders, another guy who may\may not be top 2-caliber guy in 3 years is only going to knock one of these lashoff\wishart\mihalik\lundin\etc etc etc guys one step further away from ever contributing in a lightning jersey. considering all the high draft picks invested directly or indirectly in these guys, it makes the trade doubly wasteful.
